چکیده

In this paper, we discuss the human thematic fit judgement correlation task in the context of real-valued vector space word representations. Thematic fit is the extent to which an argument fulfils the selectional preference of a verb given a role: for example, how well “cake” fulfils the patient role of “cut”. In recent work, systems have been evaluated on this task by finding the correlations of their output judgements with human-collected judgement data. This task is a representationindependent way of evaluating models that can be applied whenever a system score can be generated, and it is applicable wherever predicate-argument relations are significant to performance in end-user tasks. Significant progress has been made on this cognitive modeling task, leaving considerable space for future, more comprehensive types of evaluation.

A Robust and Extensible Exemplar-Based Model of Thematic Fit

This paper presents a new, exemplar-based model of thematic fit. In contrast to previous models, it does not approximate thematic fit as argument plausibility or ‘fit with verb selectional preferences’, but directly as semantic role plausibility for a verb-argument pair, through similaritybased generalization from previously seen verb-argument pairs. This makes the model very robust for data sp...

Roleo: Visualising Thematic Fit Spaces on the Web

In this paper, we present Roleo, a web tool for visualizing the vector spaces generated by the evaluation of distributional memory (DM) models over thematic fit judgements. A thematic fit judgement is a rating of the selectional preference of a verb for an argument that fills a given thematic role. The DM approach to thematic fit judgements involves the construction of a sub-space in which a pr...

Improving the Use of Pseudo-Words for Evaluating Selectional Preferences

This paper improves the use of pseudowords as an evaluation framework for selectional preferences. While pseudowords originally evaluated word sense disambiguation, they are now commonly used to evaluate selectional preferences. A selectional preference model ranks a set of possible arguments for a verb by their semantic fit to the verb. Pseudo-words serve as a proxy evaluation for these decisi...

Thematic Roles and Semantic Space Insights from Distributional Semantic Models

The goal of this work is to use Distributional Semantic Models (Sahlgren, 2006; Turney, 2010) to get insights into the nature of thematic roles. In particular, we investigate whether the semantic representation produced by Distributional Semantic Models (henceforth, DSMs) is sensitive to effects of typicality involving thematic roles, and we quantify their relative prominence in the semantic re...

Learning Thematic Role Relations for Wordnets

In this paper, I present a method for learning thematic role relations (selectional preferences) for wordnets by means of statistical corpus analysis. An evaluation on a gold standard, which I extracted from EuroWordNet, shows that this method achieves a learning accuracy of up to 77%. I also propose a preprocessing step for a partial lexical disambiguation of the input data. This disambiguatio...
