Expectation-based scan statistics for monitoring spatial time series data

چکیده

We consider the simultaneous monitoring of a large number of spatially localized time series in order to detect emerging spatial patterns. For example, in disease surveillance, we detect emerging outbreaks by monitoring electronically available public health data, e.g. aggregate daily counts of Emergency Department visits. We propose a two-step approach based on the expectation-based scan statistic: we first compute the expected count for each recent day for each spatial location, then find spatial regions (groups of nearby locations) where the recent counts are significantly higher than expected. By aggregating information across multiple time series rather than monitoring each series separately, we can improve the timeliness, accuracy, and spatial resolution of detection. We evaluate several variants of the expectation-based scan statistic on the disease surveillance task (using synthetic outbreaks injected into real-world hospital Emergency Department data), and draw conclusions about which models and methods are most appropriate for which surveillance tasks. c © 2008 International Institute of Forecasters. A Nonparametric Scan Statistic for Multivariate Disease Surveillance

OBJECTIVE We present a new method for multivariate outbreak detection, the “nonparametric scan statistic” (NPSS). NPSS enables fast and accurate detection of emerging space-time clusters using multiple disparate data streams, including nontraditional data sources where standard parametric model assumptions are incorrect. BACKGROUND Expectation-based scan statistics [1] extend the traditional sp...

An empirical comparison of spatial scan statistics for outbreak detection

BACKGROUND The spatial scan statistic is a widely used statistical method for the automatic detection of disease clusters from syndromic data. Recent work in the disease surveillance community has proposed many variants of Kulldorff's original spatial scan statistic, including expectation-based Poisson and Gaussian statistics, and incorporates a variety of time series analysis methods to obtain...

A flexibly shaped space-time scan statistic for disease outbreak detection and monitoring

BACKGROUND Early detection of disease outbreaks enables public health officials to implement disease control and prevention measures at the earliest possible time. A time periodic geographical disease surveillance system based on a cylindrical space-time scan statistic has been used extensively for disease surveillance along with the SaTScan software. In the purely spatial setting, many differe...

Iran’s Maize Import Policy Based on the Exchange Rate Volatility and Price Expectation

The present study has made an attempt to discuss the effects of exchange rate volatility and price expectation on maize imports in Iran from 1980 to 2013. In doing so, using the EGARCH technique for time series econometrics, price volatility variables for both exchange rate and final price have been calculated, and the time series for these variables have been extracted. Additionally, in regard...

An Expectation-Based Scan Statistic for Detection of Space-Time Clusters

OBJECTIVE This paper describes a new class of space-time scan statistics designed for rapid detection of emerging disease clusters. We evaluate these methods on the task of prospective disease surveillance, and show that our methods consistently outperform the standard space-time scan statistic approach. BACKGROUND The space-time scan statistic [1] is a powerful statistical tool for prospective...
