The Blanket Bog – Upland Forest Complex of North Coastal British Columbia: Succession, Disturbance and Implications for Management

چکیده
Introduction The vegetation on the outer north coast of British Columbia is largely a complex mixture of blanket bog and upland forest. The upland forest consists of several types, including lower productivity redcedardominated stands. For the most part these redcedar forests have little or no history of forest harvesting. In recent years, however, interest has grown in determining whether these forests can be harvested and regenerated in a sustainable manner. Understanding ecological processes, such as succession and disturbance, is critical to this determination because of the close ecological relationships between forests and bogs on the north coast, and the importance of disturbance in controlling bog and forest succession.

Long-Term Fire Regime Estimated from Soil Charcoal in Coastal Temperate Rainforests
Coastal temperate rainforests from southeast Alaska through to southern Oregon are ecologically distinct from forests of neighboring regions, which have a drier, or more continental, climate and disturbance regimes dominated by fires. The long-term role of fire remains one of the key outstanding sources of uncertainty in the historical dynamics of the wetter and less seasonal forests that domin...
متن کاملHuman dimensions of forest disturbance by insects: an international synthesis.
Ecological disturbances of forests by insects have a complex array of associated human dimensions presenting complications for natural resource decision making and relationships between stakeholders and managers. This article discusses the human context of forest disturbances by insects by reviewing four cases of bark beetle forest disturbance from British Columbia in Canada, Bavarian Forest Na...

War has devastating implications for families, communities, cultures, economies, and state infrastructure. Similarly, the last decade has seen an increase in the number of attacks against health workers in conflict zones and unstable environments. Unfortunately, these attacks have grave consequences for local populations which often rely on foreign aid programs for their health and well-being. ...
متن کاملCanopy gaps characteristics and structural dynamics in a natural unmanaged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand in the north of Iran
Canopy gaps are one of the most important structural features of forest ecosystems, and studying of them can have useful results and implications for forest management. The aim of this study is investigation of characteristics and regeneration within canopy gaps in an intact beech stand in the Shastkalateh Experimental Forest of Hyrcanian region, north of Iran. All canopy gaps and related fores...
متن کاملChanges in the concentration, biodegradability, and fluorescent properties of dissolved organic matter during stormflows in coastal temperate watersheds
[1] Dissolved organic matter (DOM) transport during storms is studied because it is important in the annual watershed export budget for dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We sampled stream water from two watersheds (upland and wetland-dominated) and three subcatchments (bog, forested wetland, and mineral forest) located within the wetland-dominated watershed during a fall and summer storm to inves...
