Supermassive Black Hole Merger Rates: Uncertainties from Halo Merger Theory
نویسندگان
چکیده
The merger of two supermassive black holes is expected to produce a gravitational-wave signal detectable by the satellite LISA. The rate of supermassive-black-hole mergers is intimately connected to the halo merger rate, and the extended Press–Schechter formalism is often employed when calculating the rate at which these events will be observed by LISA. This merger theory is flawed and provides two rates for the merging of the same pair of haloes. We show that the two predictions for the LISA supermassive-black-hole-merger event rate from extended Press–Schechter merger theory are nearly equal because mergers between haloes of similar masses dominate the event rate. An alternative merger rate may be obtained by inverting the Smoluchowski coagulation equation to find the merger rate that preserves the Press– Schechter halo abundance, but these rates are only available for power-law power spectra. We compare the LISA event rates derived from the extended Press–Schechter merger formalism to those derived from the merger rates obtained from the coagulation equation and find that the extended Press–Schechter LISA event rates are thirty percent higher for a power spectrum spectral index that approximates the full ΛCDM result of the extended Press–Schechter theory.

The Role of Primordial Kicks on Black Hole Merger Rates
Primordial stars are likely to be very massive ≥ 30 M⊙, form in isolation, and will likely leave black holes as remnants in the centers of their host dark matter halos in the mass range 10 − 10 M⊙. Such early black holes, at redshifts z∼ 10, could be the seed black holes for the many supermassive black holes found in galaxies in the local universe. If they exist, their mergers with nearby super...
متن کاملHow Rapidly Do Supermassive Black Hole “seeds” Grow at Early Times?
We investigate the physical conditions for the growth of intermediate mass seed black holes assumed to have formed from remnants of the first generation of massive stars. We follow the collapse of high-σ halos with Tvir > 104 K using cosmological, smooth-particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations in the standard ΛCDM model. During collapse of the parent halo the seed holes are incorporated through...
متن کاملThe Kozai Mechanism and the Evolution of Binary Supermassive Black Holes
We consider the dynamical evolution of bound, hierarchical triples of supermassive black holes that might be formed in the nuclei of galaxies undergoing sequential mergers. The tidal force of the outer black hole on the inner binary produces eccentricity oscillations through the Kozai mechanism, and this can substantially reduce the gravitational wave merger time of the inner binary. We numeric...
متن کاملSystematic investigation of the expected gravitational wave signal from supermassive black hole binaries in the pulsar timing band
In this letter we carry out the first systematic investigation of the expected gravitational wave (GW) background generated by supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries in the nHz frequency band accessible to pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). We take from the literature several estimates of the redshift dependent galaxy mass function and of the fraction of close galaxy pairs to derive a wide range of ...

Aims. We investigate the cosmological growth of dark halos and follow the consequences of coeval growth for the accretion history of associated supermassive black holes. Methods. The Press-Schechter approximation is used to obtain an analytic expression for the mean rate of growth of dark matter halos. Dark halo accretion rates are compared with numerical work and the consequences for understan...
