Bilateral Posterior Fracture Dislocation of the Shoulder Following an Epileptic Seizure
We report a rare case of a 39-year-old man with bilateral posterior dislocated shoulder joints with comminuted fractures of the humeral heads after an epileptic seizure. Posterior shoulder dislocations prove to be a diagnostic challenge and in this case were missed at initial presentation. After a failed attempt of osteosynthesis and removal of material, he received a hemi-prosthesis in separat...
متن کاملSimultaneous bilateral fractures of the hip following a grand mal seizure. An unusual complication
Pathological fractures as a consequence of convulsive seizures without direct trauma occur in 0.3% of cases. Some lesions such as bilateral posterior dislocation of the shoulder, fracture-dislocation of the shoulder or fracture and/or dislocation of the hip strongly suggest a seizure as the aetiology. We report on a patient with simultaneous central dislocation of one hip with fracture of the c...
متن کاملBilateral Asymmetrical Fracture Dislocation of Shoulder with Rare Combination of Injuries after Epileptic Seizure: A Case Report
The incidence of bilateral gleno-humeral joint dislocation is rare, is almost always posterior and is usually caused by sports injuries, epileptic seizures, electrical shock, or electroconvulsive therapy. Bilateral fracture-dislocation is even rarer, with a few cases reported in the literature. We report an unusual case with dislocation of the both glenohumeral joints in opposite direction afte...
متن کاملSimultaneous posterior fracture dislocation of the shoulder following epileptic convulsion
Shoulder dislocations with fractures are a possible complication of an epileptic seizure and are often missed on the first sight. The incidence of sustaining an avascular humeral head necrosis (AVN) is high, and primary prosthetic replacement is the choice of treatment. In this paper, we describe such a rare case: a 48-year-old male patient sustained simultaneous bilateral posterior shoulder di...
متن کاملPosterior dislocation fractures of the shoulder in seizure disorders—two case reports and a review of literature
We present two patients with complaints of shoulder pain after an epileptic seizure. Both patients had a posterior dislocation fracture of the shoulder. After reviewing the literature the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) A posterior shoulder dislocation fracture is rare. (2) One should not underestimate the muscular forces in seizure disorders and be alert for dislocation fractures of th...
