Characterization of Polymer Morphology in Polyurethane Foams Using Atomic Force Microscopy

چکیده
One of the most important challenges in polyurethane (PU) science is characterization of foam morphologies, which provides information to help understand material properties and improve synthesis conditions. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a very useful technique to obtain such information. A key challenge is to apply this technique to PU foams without destroying their cell structure. In this article, we describe the development of a methodology to characterize different types of PU foams using AFM while keeping the foam cells intact. Epoxy resin was used to impregnate the foams and was cured afterwards. Smooth surfaces were created using a microtome to minimize topographic effects during AFM examination. Phase information was obtained on the PU matrix and differentiated from the epoxy in AFM. This technique is demonstrated using several different foams including a flexible foam, two different elastomeric foams, and a rigid foam nanocomposite. Comparison with compression techniques reveals that the proposed method does not modify foam morphology. VC 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 121: 2644–2651, 2011

Introduction: Reducing noise pollution has become an essential issue due to the increase in public concern and also social demands for a better lifestyle. Using sound absorption materials is a preferred method to reduce the noise pollution. Undesirable properties of pure polyurethane such as poor absorption of mechanical energy in narrow frequency ranges can be improved by providing polymeric n...

Since the development of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in 1991, they have received much attention with improved mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of their composites compared to common polymer composites. This study evaluated the effect of incorporating bundled and unbundled carbon nanotubes into Polyurethane/CNT/woven fiber reinforced composites. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used t...

In the reaction of 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate), polycaprolactone diol, and N-methyldiethanolamine, they were synthesized aqueous dispersions of polyurethane cationomers, from which films were prepared after adding 0-2 wt% graphene. In order to obtain nanocomposites, graphene was previously noncovalent functionalized in tetrahydrofurane in the field of ultrasound. The chemical structure...
متن کاملTribological behavior of orthopedic foams/artificial skin systems: the effect of morphology, mechanical properties and surface free energy
The discomfort associated to the use of orthosis results mainly from friction between the coating material, in this case the foams, and human skin. Although, nowadays the use of such devices is common, there is few information concerning the influence of the properties of the foams in the tribological behavior of the orthosis. In this study it was investigated the effect of the morphology, mech...

Since the development of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in 1991, they have received much attention with improved mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of their composites compared to common polymer composites. The CNTs are currently used to increase the modulus of common thermoplastics and thermosets, including urethanes and epoxies. The CNTs are difficult to disperse within any media because...
