Development of Automatic Speech Recognition and Synthesis Technologies to Support Chinese Learners of English: The CUHK Experience
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents our group’s ongoing research in the area of computer-aided pronunciation training (CAPT) for Chinese learners of English. Our goal is to develop technologies in automatic speech recognition (ASR) to support productive training for learners. We focus on modeling possible errors due to negative transfer from L1 (i.e. Chinese) of Chinese learners to L2 (English). ASR techniques are used for fine phonetic analyses to achieve mispronunciation detection and diagnoses. Learners’ inputs that are grossly erroneous are handled by an utterance rejection technique. We also present initial work in the development of audio and visual speech synthesis to provide corrective feedback for learners. This paper presents an overview of the technologies, related experimental results and ongoing work as well as future plans.

Developing Speech Recognition and Synthesis Technologies to Support Computer-Aided Pronunciation Training for Chinese Learners of English
Copyright 2009 by Helen Meng Abstract. We describe ongoing research in the development of speech technologies that strives to raise the efficacy of computer-aided pronunciation training, especially for Chinese learners of English. Our approach is grounded on the theory of language transfer and involves a systematic phonological comparison between the primary language (L1 being Chinese) and seco...
متن کاملPragmalinguistic and Sociopragmatic Recognition of High and Low Level EFL Learners
This study investigated the effects of English as foreign language (EFL) proficiency on what the authors of this study called pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic recognition of EFL learners. To elicit the data, the study used two types of pragmatic measures: a pragmalinguistic recognition (PLR) test and a sociopragmatic recognition (SPR) test. Both tests were developed by the researchers of thi...

متن کاملThe effects of task complexity on Chinese learners’ language production: A synthesis and meta-analysis
The present meta-analysis was conducted to provide a quantitative measure of the overall effects of task complexity on Chinese EFL learners’ language production. Based on the strict inclusion criteria, 12 primary studies were synthesized according to key features. Eleven of them were meta-analyzed to investigate effects of raising the resource-directing task comple...
متن کاملLandmark-Based Pronunciation Error Identification on Chinese Learning
This paper explores a novel approach of identifying pronunciation errors for the second language (L2) learners based on the landmark theory of human speech perception. Earlier works on the selection method of distinctive features and the likelihoodbased “goodness of pronunciation” (GOP) measurement have gained progress in several L2 languages, e.g. Dutch and English. However, the improvement of...
