Morphology, Mechanical Properties and Manipulation of Living Cells: Atomic Force Microscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is becoming an increasingly important tool-of-thetrade in the life sciences. In the study of morphology and dynamics of cells it has the particular merit of being able to interact non-destructively with live cells in vitro. Thus it occupies a unique niche in the suite of techniques that has so far been dominated by the photonand electron-optical microscopies and spectroscopies. In addition, AFM in the lateral force and force-versus-distance operational modes can gain access to information that cannot be obtained by other means. Recent results obtained by AFM analysis of human fibroblasts and cancer cells (MDA) are described and discussed.

Finite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy
The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...

The effect of geometry and material of the Micro/Nano particle on contact mechanic for manipulation was studied in this work based on atomic force microscopy. Hertz contact model simulation for EpH biological micro particle with spherical, cylindrical, and circular crowned roller shape was used to investigate the effect of geometry on contact simulation process in manipulation. Then, to val...

Recently, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been shown to be a suitable tool for imaging biological structures and their modification, adding to accurate morphological and cytomechanical information. AFM is capable of simultaneous nanometer spatial resolution and piconewton force detection, allowing detailed study of a cell surface morphology and monitoring of cell-tip interactions. Modern AFM ...

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) indentation on living cells in physiological medium is a well established technique used for investigation of the cell mechanical properties at nanoscale. However, interpretation of the experimental data obtained in such experiments is rarely a trivial task. This is happening because living cells have a complex response to the applied mechanical stress, response th...
