During the last decade, GSM technology (and more recently GPRS and UMTS) have made an impressive entry into a world where fixed telephony dominated the telecommunications sector. Established and new providers of these technologies used the same economic model as the fixed-line providers. An end user was obliged to obtain a subscription from a particular provider who also owned the network. Roaming between wireless networks was not possible.
