چکیده

www.spectroscopyonl ine.com espite recent advances in Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) microspectroscopy and micro-attenuated total reflectance (ATR), for many types of samples there remains a need for even higher spatial resolution, or for a nondestructive method of recording localized mid-IR spectra from asreceived samples without the risk of damage or alteration by preparation techniques. A promising technique is the recently developed method of nearfield IR microspectroscopy using a photothermal probe. We discuss progress in the development of this technique and give examples of how it can be applied to the spectroscopic characterization of real-world samples. Following a brief survey of several limitations of the more commonly used mid-IR microspectroscopy sampling techniques, this article briefly discusses the variants of near-field scanning probe methods, in which lateral spatial resoluD Mid-infrared

Non-Invasive Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy and Imaging Techniques: Basic Principles and Applications

The current paper describes rather new and straightforward non-invasive mid infrared spectroscopic techniques for the position sensitive identification of sample components. These techniques include mid infrared (MIR) microspectroscopy, mapping as well as imaging approaches e.g. in transmission, reflection-absorption, or attenuated total reflection mode. The basic principles of the different in...

Monitoring cell cycle distributions in MCF-7 cells using near-field photothermal microspectroscopy.

Microspectroscopic techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) have played an important role in "fingerprinting" the biochemical composition of cellular components. Based on structure and function, complex biomolecules absorb energy in the mid-infrared (lambda = 2-20 microm) yielding characteristic vibrational infrared (IR) spectra. However, optical detection FTIR microspectroscopy may...

Nonlinear Midinfrared Photothermal Spectroscopy Using Zharov Splitting and Quantum Cascade Lasers

We report on the mid-infrared nonlinear photothermal spectrum of the neat liquid crystal 4-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) using a tunable Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL). The nonequilibrium steady state characterized by the nonlinear photothermal infrared response undergoes a supercritical bifurcation. The bifurcation, observed in heterodyne two-color pump-probe detection, leads to ultrasharp nonline...

Near- and mid-infrared microspectroscopy of the Ronda peridotite

[1] Microspectroscopy is a potentially useful tool for planetary applications, as individual mineral grains can be targeted and measured in situ. A series of closely coupled experiments was designed to investigate and compare the laboratory measurement of optical properties of a peridotite sample in the macroscale and microscale. The Ronda peridotite consists largely of olivine with significant...

Discrimination of Human Stem Cells by Photothermal Microspectroscopy

Stem cells have great potential in clinical medicine. Sensitive methods for stem cell identification are a requirement for the development of medical interventions involving these cells. To date, a definitive stem cell marker has not been discovered. We are exploring the use of photothermal microspectroscopy (PTMS) for the purpose of stem cell characterisation and identification in human cornea...
