Neurocysticercosis and epilepsy

چکیده
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic disease of the central nervous system that affects thousands of people all over the world, mainly in Latin America (Mexico, Central America, equatorial zone, and Brazil), Asia (India and China), and Africa. Also because of the high immigration rates from endemic to nonendemic areas, NCC is now commonly seen in countries that were previously free of the disease. Although NCC can cause almost any neurological symptom, and the most common clinical manifestations are epilepsy and acute symptomatic seizures. NCC is the leading cause of epilepsy in the developing world. Epileptogenesis in NCC can be attributed to multiple causes, mostly of a direct or indirect effects of inflammation, gliosis, gene, and predilection for the cyst to travel to the frontal and temporal lobe. Recent community intervention studies show that educational and public health measures can reduce the incidence and prevalence of active epilepsy as well as preventable epilepsy from NCC in endemic populations.

Objective. To determine the contribution of neurocysticercosis as a cause for active epilepsy and to establish Neurocysticercosis as major definable risk of epilepsy in our setup. Methods. We conducted a door-to-door survey of 2,209 individuals of Bhore Pind and Bhore Kullian villages in Chattah zone of district Jammu (Jumma and Kashmir, Northwest India) to identify patients with symptomatic ep...

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a biological marker of poverty and underdevelopment [1]. The frequency of this brain parasitic disease is probably high worldwide, as well as epilepsy; however, little is known about the natural history of the infection in humans. Both, NCC and epilepsy, are an increasing burden on the welfare and economy of developing countries [2]. This is why knowledge of these di...
متن کاملNEUROLOGICAL ASPECTS OF TROPICAL DISEASE Neurocysticercosis and epilepsy in developing countries
Neurocysticercosis is a disease of poverty and underdevelopment. Little is known about the natural history of the infection in humans, but some of the mechanisms whereby the parasite remains silent and evades the host immune response are understood. Symptomatic neurocysticercosis usually results from host inflammatory response after parasite death, and the clinical manifestations can be diverse...
متن کاملHippocampal sclerosis in association with neurocysticercosis.
OBJECTIVE To discuss the possible mechanisms underlying a dual pathology combining neurocysticercosis and hippocampal atrophy, illustrated by the observation of four patients with epilepsy. CASE REPORTS The first patient presented at the age of four years with a first episode of status epilepticus, presumably due to an inflamed, calcified, parenchymal cysticercus granuloma. Thereafter, he had...
