چکیده

As in previous years, the 9th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections provided a forum for a stateof-the-art update in antiretroviral therapy. Highlights included the status of new antiretroviral agents from both existing and new drug classes; presentation of trials in antiretroviral-naive and antiretroviral-experienced persons; updates on strategic approaches to therapy, including when to start therapy, treatment interruptions, and immunebased therapies; mechanisms and evolution of viral drug resistance; clinical applications of drug resistance testing; and therapeutic drug-level monitoring.

Choosing Initial Antiretroviral Therapy: Current Recommendations for Initial Therapy and Newer or Investigational Agents.

There is general consistency among US and European guidelines regarding the initiation of antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected individuals. Recent and ongoing trials comparing regimens may lead to reevaluation of initial treatment choices. The choice of antiretroviral regimen will also likely be affected by development, evaluation, and availability of newer drugs. This article reviews curren...

Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC).

Over 10,000 research scientists attended the ICAAC meeting in Toronto, Canada. The continued increase in the rate of resistance in bacteria and fungi and the underlying mechanisms of resistance were the focus of many presentations this year. So, too, were the attempts to combat this emerging resistance crisis. Many papers described new modifications to older antimicrobials, novel classes of ant...

Antiretroviral Drug Interactions: Overview of Interactions Involving New and Investigational Agents and the Role of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring for Management

Antiretrovirals are prone to drug-drug and drug-food interactions that can result in subtherapeutic or supratherapeutic concentrations. Interactions between antiretrovirals and medications for other diseases are common due to shared metabolism through cytochrome P450 (CYP450) and uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes and transport by membrane proteins (e.g., p-glycoprotein, ...
