Gilmore, S.1 and Hill, K.D. (National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia; 1 Present address: Division of Botany and Zoology, Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 0200, Australia) 1997. Relationships of the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) and a molecular phylogeny of the Araucariaceae. Telopea 7(3): 275–291. Sequences were obtained for the rbcL gene from chloroplast DNA of the newly discovered Australian conifer Wollemia nobilis (Araucariaceae), 5 species of Araucaria and 4 species of Agathis. Phylogenetic analysis of our new data and other available sequences indicate that 1) Araucariaceae is monophyletic; 2) Agathis and Araucaria are both monophyletic; 3) Wollemia is the sister group to Agathis; 4) the Pinaceae are the sister group to all other conifers, although the monophyly of the conifers is not unequivocally demonstrated. The utility of rbcL for deriving a robust phylogeny of the Araucariaceae and of the conifers is discussed.

Complete Chloroplast Genome of the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis): Structure and Evolution

The Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis) is a rare Southern conifer with striking morphological similarity to fossil pines. A small population of W. nobilis was discovered in 1994 in a remote canyon system in the Wollemi National Park (near Sydney, Australia). This population contains fewer than 100 individuals and is critically endangered. Previous genetic studies of the Wollemi pine have investiga...

First Evidence for Wollemi Pine-type Pollen (Dilwynites: Araucariaceae) in South America

We report the first fossil pollen from South America of the lineage that includes the recently discovered, extremely rare Australian Wollemi Pine, Wollemia nobilis (Araucariaceae). The grains are from the late Paleocene to early middle Eocene Ligorio Márquez Formation of Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina, and are assigned to Dilwynites, the fossil pollen type that closely resembles the pollen of...

New hopes for the lonesome pine

The star of last month's Chelsea Flower Show, also featuring in many other international events, was one of the world's rarest and most prehistoric trees, now the subject of innovative conservation strategies in its native Australia. Hannah Robertson reports. In a secret location deep within Wollemi National Park, 200 km northwest of Sydney, lives perhaps the most intriguing tree in the world: ...

Rising temperature may negate the stimulatory effect of rising CO2 on’growth and physiology of Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis)

Rising atmospheric [CO2] is associated with increased air temperature, and this warming may drive many rare plant species to extinction. However, to date, studies on the interactive effects of rising [CO2] andwarming have focussed on just a few widely distributed plant species. Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilisW.G.Jones, K.D.Hill, & J.M.Allen), formerly widespread in Australia, was reduced to a re...

Drought avoidance and vulnerability in the Australian Araucariaceae.

The Araucariaceae is an iconic tree family. Once globally important, the Araucariaceae declined dramatically over the Cenozoic period. Increasing aridity is thought to be responsible for extinction and range contraction of Araucariaceae in Australia, yet little is known about how these trees respond to water stress. We examined the response to water stress of the recently discovered tree Wollem...
