چکیده

The spontaneous resolution of herniated cervical discs has not been previously well documented. The authors analysed four cases who underwent spontaneous resolution of herniated cervical discs, and all other cases reported in the literature. A complex physiopathologic mechanism that includes the release of basic fibroblast grow factors, endothelial cell proliferation, chemotaxis of inflammatory cells into the disc fragment, foreign body inflammatory reaction, neovascularization and phagocytosis and accounts for the resorption of herniated discs is reviewed. © 2001 Harcourt Publishers Ltd

Acupuncture and Spontaneous Regression of a Radiculopathic Cervical Herniated Disc

The spontaneous regression of herniated cervical discs is not a well-established phenomenon. However, we encountered a case of a spontaneous regression of a severe radiculopathic herniated cervical disc that was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herb medicine. The symptoms were improved within 12 months of treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conducted at that time revealed...

Localization of cathepsins G and L in spontaneous resorption of intervertebral discs in a rat experimental model.

To determine the involvement of cathepsins G and L in the mechanism of spontaneous resorption of herniated intervertebral discs, localization of these cathepsins in this process was examined immunohistochemically using a rat model of autologous transplantation of coccygeal discs. Rat coccygeal discs were resected and autotransplanted into the subcutaneous space of the skin of the back. Paraffin...

Translational research of herniated discs: current status of diagnosis and treatment

Lumbar herniated discs commonly occur in patients 20-40 years of age, and result in acute symptoms of shooting and intractable pain in the low back and/or lower extremities. However, the prognosis of these patients is considered to be very good. Moreover, 70% of these patients have been reported to be free from sciatica at approximately 6 months after the first onset. Magnetic resonance imaging...

Prevalence of concomitant sacroiliac joint dysfunction in patients with image proven herniated lumbar discs

Abstract   Background: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction is a widely known but poorly defined   cause of low back pain. To our knowledge, few published studies have been   conducted to evaluate systematically the prevalence and significance of concomitant   sacroiliac joint dysfunction in patients with herniated lumbar discs. As concomitant   SIJ dysfunction in low back pain patients is like...

Pregnancy and the syndrome of herniated lumbar intervertebral disc; an epidemiological study.

In a study of the epidemiology of acute herniated lumbar intervertebral discs in the New Haven, Connecticut, area, it was found that the female cases had had more pregnancies resulting in live births than women of similar age without known herniated discs. However, cases had not had more pregnancies resulting in miscarriages than other women of their age. Among women who underwent surgery for t...
