Isotopic fractionation of the major elements of molten basalt by chemical and thermal diffusion

چکیده
Samples produced in piston cylinder experiments were used to document the thermal isotopic fractionation of all the major elements of basalt except for aluminum and the fractionation of iron isotopes by chemical diffusion between a natural basalt and rhyolite. The thermal isotopic fractionations are summarized in terms of a parameter Xi defined as the fractionation in per mil per 100 C per atomic mass units difference between the isotopes. For molten basalt we report XCa = 1.6, XFe = 1.1, XSi = 0.6, XO = 1.5. In an earlier paper we reported XMg = 3.6. These fractionations represent a steady state balance between thermal diffusion and chemical diffusion with the mass dependence of the thermal diffusion coefficient being significantly larger than the mass dependence of the chemical diffusion coefficients for isotopes of the same element. The iron isotopic measurements of the basalt–rhyolite diffusion couple showed significant fractionation that are parameterized in terms of a parameter bFe = 0.03 when the ratio of the diffusion coefficients D54 and D56 of Fe and Fe is expressed in terms of the atomic mass as D54/D56 = ð56=54ÞFe . This value of bFe is smaller than what we had measured earlier for lithium, magnesium and calcium (i.e., bLi = 0.215, bCa = 0.05, bMg = 0.05) but still significant when one takes into account the high precision with which iron isotopic compositions can be measured (i.e., ±0.03&) and that iron isotope fractionations at magmatic temperatures from other causes are extremely small. In a closing section we discuss technological and geological applications of isotopic fractionations driven by either or both chemical and thermal gradients. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Stable isotope fractionation by thermal diffusion through partially molten wet and dry silicate rocks
Water plays a fundamental role in affecting geochemical transport and physical properties of magmas. Here we show the previously undocumented behavior of water within partially molten silicate resting in a temperature gradient, producing O, Li and H isotope redistribution by thermal diffusion leading to enrichment of light isotopes at the hot end of the gradient. After weeks to months, fully mo...
متن کاملGlobal-scale modelling of melting and isotopic evolution of Earth’s mantle: melting modules for TERRA
Many outstanding problems in solid-Earth science relate to the geodynamical explanation of geochemical observations. Currently, extensive geochemical databases of surface observations exist, but satisfying explanations of underlying mantle processes are lacking. One way to address these problems is through numerical modelling of mantle convection while tracking chemical information throughout t...

The Cenozoic volcanic activity of the Harrat Ash Sham volcanic field in south of Syria is a part of the extensive magmatism that took place in the auxiliary extension faults along the Dead Sea Fault Zone from upper Eocene to Holocene. Pliocene volcanic rocks form an important part of igneous succession in Syrian Part of Harrat as Sham. These rocks vary from basalts flows to scoria. Pliocene bas...
متن کاملLiquid composition-dependence of calcium isotope fractionation during diffusion in molten silicates
Liquid phase diffusion experiments were carried out to determine whether diffusive isotopic fractionation of a major chemical element (Ca) varies with chemical composition in high-temperature molten silicates. The objective was to determine how differences in silicate liquid structure, such as the ratio of bridging to non-bridging oxygen atoms, as well as bulk transport properties such as visco...
متن کاملSize and Density of Chondrule Formation Regions from Missing Isotopic Fractionation
Introduction: Chondrules were probably formed as freely floating molten droplets by brief, very energetic, events in the protoplanetary nebula. Melting of such small objects in the near-vacuum of the nebula should evaporate their more volatile elements, preferentially removing the lighter isotopes of these elements. Chondrules are depleted in their more volatile elements, but unlike other molte...
