چکیده

Weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by foreground structures has proven to be a powerful tool to study the mass distribution in the universe. Nowadays, attention has shifted from clusters of galaxies to the statistical properties of the large scale structures and the halos of (field) galaxies. These applications have become feasible with the advent of panoramic cameras on 4m class telescopes. In this review we will give an overview of recent advances in this fast evolving field of astronomy. We start with a discussion of the recent measurements of weak lensing by large scale structure (“cosmic shear”), which can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. We also show how weak lensing can be used to measure the relation between galaxies and dark matter (galaxy biasing) directly. Another area that benefitted greatly from the current data is the weak lensing by galaxies (galaxy-galaxy lensing). Weak lensing provides a unique probe of the gravitational potential on large scales. Hence, in the context of dark matter, it can provide constrains on the extent and shapes of dark matter halos. Furthermore, it can test alternative theories of gravity (without dark matter). The best constraint comes from the first detection of the anisotropy of the lensing signal around lens galaxies, which suggest that the dark matter halos are flattened. An isotropic signal, as predicted by MOND, is excluded with 99% confidence.

Weak Gravitational Lensing: Current Status and Future Prospects

In this review I will describe progress that has been made in determining masses of galaxy clusters using ‘weak lensing’ and how this technique my be applied in the future to determine the dark matter distribution both on supercluster scales and on the scale of galaxy haloes.

Kinematic effect in gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies

Gravitational lensing provides an efficient tool for the investigation of matter structures, independent of the dynamical or hydrostatic equilibrium properties of the deflecting system. However, it depends on the kinematic status. In fact, either a translational motion or a coherent rotation of the mass distribution can affect the lensing properties. Here, light deflection by galaxy clusters in...

New Dimensions in Cosmic Lensing

I review the current status of combing weak gravitational lensing with depth information from redshifts as a direct probe of dark matter and dark energy in the Universe. In particular I highlight: (1) The first maximum likelihood measurement of the cosmic shear power spectrum, with the COMBO17 dataset; (2) A new method for mapping the 3-D dark matter distribution from weak shear, and its first ...

Intrinsic Galaxy Alignments and Weak Gravitational Lensing

Gravitational lensing causes background galaxy images to become aligned, and the statistical characteristics of the image alignments can then be used to constrain the power spectrum of mass fluctuations. Analyses of gravitational lensing assume that intrinsic galaxy alignments are negligible, but if this assumption does not hold, then the interpretation of image alignments will be in error. As ...

Weak gravitational lensing

We review theory and applications of weak gravitational lensing. After summarising Friedmann}Lemam( tre cosmological models, we present the formalism of gravitational lensing and light propagation in arbitrary space}times. We discuss how weak-lensing e!ects can be measured. The formalism is then applied to reconstructions of galaxy-cluster mass distributions, gravitational lensing by large-scal...
