چکیده

We report on ESO–VLT adaptive optics imaging of one radio-loud quasar at z ∼ 3. In spite of the large distance of the object we are able to detect its surrounding extended nebulosity the properties of which are consistent with an underlying massive galaxy of MK ∼ –27 and effective radius Re = 7 kpc. As far as we know this is the clearest detection of a radio loud quasar host at high redshift. The host luminosity is indicative of the existence of massive spheroids even at this early cosmic epoch. The host luminosity is about 1 magnitude fainter than the expected value based on the average trend of the host galaxies of RLQ at lower redshift. The result, which however is based on a single object, suggests that at z ∼ 3 there is a deviation from a luminosity–redshift dependence regulated only by passive evolution.

Near-infrared Adaptive Optics Imaging of High-redshift Quasars

The properties of high-redshift quasar host galaxies are studied in order to investigate the connection between galaxy evolution, nuclear activity, and the formation of supermassive black holes. We combine new near-IR observations of three high-redshift quasars (2 < z < 3), obtained at the ESOVery Large Telescope equipped with adaptive optics, with selected data from the literature. For the thr...

Quasar Clustering from Sdss Dr5: Dependences on Physical Properties

Using a homogenous sample of 38,208 quasars with a sky coverage of ∼ 4000deg2 drawn from the SDSS Data Release Five quasar catalog, we study the dependence of quasar clustering on luminosity, virial black hole mass, quasar color, and radio loudness. At z < 2.5, quasar clustering depends weakly on luminosity and virial black hole mass, with typical uncertainty levels ∼ 10% for the measured corre...

Qso Environments at Intermediate Redshifts

We have made a survey of quasar environments at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8, using a sample of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars matched in B-band luminosity. Our observations include images of background control fields to provide a good determination of the field galaxy counts. About 10 per cent of the quasars appear to live in rich clusters, whereas approximately 45 per cent live in environments simi...

The Host Galaxies of Three Radio-loud Quasars: 3c 48, 3c 345, and B2 1425]2671 Sofia Kirhakos

Observations with the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera-2 of the Hubble Space T elescope are presented for three radio-loud quasars : 3C 48 (z\ 0.367), B2 1425]267 (z\ 0.366), and 3C 345 (z\ 0.594). All three quasars have luminous (D4 ] L*) galaxies as hosts, which are either elliptical (B2 1425]267 and 3C345) or interacting (3C 48), and all hosts are 0.5È1.0 mag bluer in V [I than other galaxies wit...

The cosmic evolution of quasar host galaxies

We present the results of a near-infrared imaging study of the host galaxies of 17 quasars in the redshift range 1< z <2. The observations were carried out at the ESO VLT UT1 8m telescope under excellent seeing conditions (∼ 0. 4). The sample includes radio-loud (RLQ) and radio-quiet (RQQ) quasars with similar distribution of redshift and optical luminosity. For all the observed objects but one...
