چکیده

Spaceborne synthetic aperture radars (SARs) measure surface radar cross section (RCS) with ground resolutions from 25 to 100 m. In turn, the RCS of the ocean surface is a function of wind speed and direction. Over the past few years, we have been routinely using RCS measured by the RADARSAT SAR to compute highresolution wind speed. We have converted over 3000 wide-swath SAR RCS images, provided by the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF), into high-resolution wind speeds. SAR images have covered both the East Coast of the United States and Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea regions. To validate these SAR-derived wind speeds we have systematically compared them to model, buoy, and, most recently, QuikSCAT scatterometer wind speed measurements. Thus far, the standard deviations of SAR wind speeds with respect to buoy or QuikSCAT wind speeds are less than 2 m/s.

Assessment and Analysis of QuikSCAT Vector Wind Products for the Gulf of Mexico: A Long-Term and Hurricane Analysis

The northern Gulf of Mexico is a region that has been frequently impacted in recent years by natural disasters such as hurricanes. The use of remote sensing data such as winds from NASA's QuikSCAT satellite sensor would be useful for emergency preparedness during such events. In this study, the performance of QuikSCAT products, including JPL's latest Level 2B (L2B) 12.5 km swath winds, were eva...

Regional accuracy of QuikSCAT gridded winds

The quality of gridded 00 UTC and 12 UTC QuikSCAT wind speed fields provided by the Florida State University (FSU) and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are analysed over the Bay of Bengal during May–August 2001. Additionally, an examination of these fields is performed over the Gulf of Mexico for the May–August period from 2001 to 2003. Both 00 UTC and 12 UTC time almost coincide with QuikS...

An Evaluation of Scatterometer-Derived Oceanic Surface Pressure Fields

Oceanic surface pressure fields are derived from the NASA Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) surface wind vector measurements using a two-layer similarity planetary boundary layer model in the midlatitudes and a mixed layer planetary boundary layer model in the tropics. These swath-based surface pressure fields are evaluated using the following three methods: 1) a comparison of bulk pressure gradie...

Ocean Wind and Current Retrievals Based on Satellite SAR Measurements in Conjunction with Buoy and HF Radar Data

A total of 168 fully polarimetric synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images are selected together with the buoy measurements of ocean surface wind fields and high-frequency radar measurements of ocean surface currents. Our objective is to investigate the effect of the ocean currents on the retrieved SAR ocean surface wind fields. The results show that, compared to SAR wind fields that are retrieved...

Comparative analysis between operational weather prediction models and QuikSCAT wind data near the Galician coast

Wind measurements from SeaWinds scatterometer on the NASA QuikSCAT satellite and wind forecasts from two different operational numerical models provided by MeteoGalicia were compared for a 4-year period (2002–2005) in Galician coast environment. Available wind data buoy measurements were also used to complement the analysis. A statistical analysis based on mean errors, root mean square errors a...
