چکیده
One hundred twenty-one anemic, transfusion-dependent patients with multiple myeloma (MM) or low-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) were randomly allocated to receive (a) recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) 10,000 U/d subcutaneously 7 days a week (fixed dose group) (n = 38). or (b) rhEPO 2,000 U/d subcutaneously for 8 weeks followed by step-wise escalation of the rhEPO dose (titration group) (n = 44). or (c) no rhEPO therapy (control group) (n = 39). The total treatment period was 24 weeks. There were no differences between the three groups with regard to baseline clinical, demographic, or health status measures. The cumulative response frequency, defined as elimination of the transfusion need in combination with an increase in the hemoglobin concentration by >20 g/L. was 60% in both rhEPO treatment groups and 24% in the control group ( P = .01 and .02, respectively, log rank test). Characteristics of Potential Protein Biomarkers Extracted with 10% TCA from Blood Serum of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma Patients
Blood serum has been extensively explored as a source of the bio-markers [1, 2]. For concentration of minor protein(s) and depletion of abundant blood serum proteins a 2,2,2-trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation procedure is frequently applied [3]. However, a significant amount of proteins may be present in the TCA extracts, and these proteins are often not studied.Recently, we have sh...
متن کاملRecombinant human erythropoietin in the anemia associated with multiple myeloma or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: dose finding and identification of predictors of response.
Previous phase I-II clinical trials have shown that recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) can ameliorate anemia in a portion of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Therefore, we performed a randomized controlled multicenter study to define the optimal initial dosage and to identify predictors of response to rHuEpo. A total of 146 patients who had hemoglobin...
متن کاملThe Efficacy of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin in Treatment Chemotherapy Induced Anemia in Children Diagnosed with a Solid Cancer
Background Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) treatment can increase hemoglobin levels and decrease transfusion requirements. This study aims to investigate how blood transfusion influences Hemoglobin levels in patients receiving rHuEPO for 12 weeks. Materials and Methods This was a case-control study of 60 patients less than 15 years with anemia and a solid tumor in any location betw...
متن کاملRecombinant Human Erythropoietin in Cancer-Related Anemia
The clinical development of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) has had a remarkable impact on the clinical practice of oncology. A decade ago, randomized, placebo-controlled trials in anemic cancer patients demonstrated that rHuEPO resulted in an improvement in hemoglobin and hematocrit, a reduction in transfusion requirements, and improvement in quality-of-life (QOL) end points. Based o...
متن کاملRecombinant Human Erythropoietin in Children with Solid Tumors and Chemotherapy-induced Anemia
Background: In patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, anemia is part of the progression of the disease. Considering the effects of anemia on quality of life of the patients, the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced anemia is crucial. This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of recombinant human erythropoietin in reducing the need for blood transfusion in children with sol...
