Effect of Pisum sativum fractions on the mortality and progeny production of nine stored-grain beetles

چکیده
Yellow field pea (Pisum sativum L.) fractions that were mainly protein (50%), fibre (90%) or starch (85%) were obtained from a commercial pea mill and mixed with wheat kernels or wheat flour. Based on the mortality and the number of offspring produced, protein-rich pea flour was more toxic than fibre, which was more toxic than starch. For the protein-rich pea flour mixed with wheat kernels, the most sensitive insects were Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Sitophilus granarius (L.), followed by Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) which was more sensitive than Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and Rhyzopertha dominica (F.). For the protein-rich pea flour mixed with wheat flour, Cryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr) was most sensitive, followed by C. turcicus (Grouvelle) and T. confusum (Jacquelin du Val), with T. castaneum being the most resistant. Although protein-rich pea flour did not kill adults to a great extent when mixed with flour, it reduced offspring production significantly. Again C. pusillus was the most sensitive, followed by T. confusum, with T. castaneum offspring being the most resistant. The insecticidal activity of pea fractions decreased after treated wheat kernels were held at 30 1C, 70% r.h. for 8 months. The potential of using pea fractions to control stored-product insects is discussed. Crown Copyright r 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Repellent effect of pea (Pisum sativum) fractions against stored-product insects.
Peas (Pisum sativum) are toxic to some stored-product insects. The repellent effect of fractions of pea seed to stored-product insects was evaluated in multiple-choice tests in which wheat kernels were dusted with fractions rich in either protein, fibre or starch at 0.001 to 10% (wt:wt). There was a negative correlation between pea protein concentration and the number of adults found in grain f...

Diatomaceous earth (DE) can be used as a surface treatment in stored wheat Triticum aestivum (L.) to control pest infestations. However, it is not known how the thickness of the DE-treated wheat layer or grain temperature impact effectiveness. Therefore, we conducted an experiment in growth chambers to assess the effect of different surface layers of hard winter wheat combined with DE on spatia...

The effect of short exposures to spinosad-treated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., or maize, Zea mays L., was evaluated against adults of four stored-product insect species: lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae); rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae); red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae); and the psoc...

Application of organic manure in organic farming and long-term mineralization may lead to residual effects on the succeeding crop. So, residual effects of combined cattle manure and urea fertilizer of previous crop (black cumin) on growth and yield of pea were examined in a randomized complete block design. Treatments included of cattle manure (CM), urea (U), three ratios of CM+U full dose app...

Highly phosphine-resistant populations of Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) have recently been found in Oklahoma grain storage facilities. These Þndings necessitate development of a phosphine resistance management strategy to ensure continued effective use of phosphine. Therefore, we investigated the efÞcacies of tw...
