چکیده

The wage distribution has been almost stable in Japan for the last two decades, contrary to findings in the USA, Canada, and the UK. The change in the wage distribution during this period was almost completely caused by a distributional change in workers’ attributes. This implies that skill prices were very stable between 1982 and 2002. Both demand and supply for skilled workers have increased because of a skillbiased technical change, and a rise in the number of college-educated workers induced by educational policy changes and the aging of the population. In the balance of the shifts in demand and supply, the skill price has been stable. After netting out the effect of the supply increase of skilled labor, we robustly find evidence for skillbiased technical change. JEL Classification: J23; J31

Skill-Biased Technological Change and Rising Wage Inequality: Some Problems and Puzzles

The recent rise in wage inequality is usually attributed to skill-biased technical change (SBTC), associated with new computer technologies. We review the evidence for this hypothesis, focusing on the implications of SBTC for overall wage inequality and for changes in wage differentials between groups. A key problem for the SBTC hypothesis is that wage inequality stabilized in the 1990s despite...

This paper aims to survey the theoretical and empirical literature on increasing wage and employment differentials in favour of high skill workers and against low skill workers. Much literature stresses the role of demand shifts against low skill workers, caused by skill biased technical change (SBTC) and by sector biased international trade (SBIT). Moreover, demand shifts with characteristics ...

The Polarization of the U.S. Labor Market

Much research (surveyed in Katz and Autor, 1999) documents a substantial widening of the U.S. wage structure since the late 1970s, driven by increases in educational wage differentials and residual wage inequality. The growth in wage inequality was most rapid during the 1980s, and involved a spreading out of the entire wage distribution. Rapid secular growth in the demand for skills, partly fro...
