چکیده

Inhibition of bacterial growth is the basis of the three methods commonly used for determining the potency of penicillin solutions. With the Oxford cup method (Abraham et al., 1941; Foster and Woodruff, 1944), penicillin is allowed to diffuse out into agar plates from small glass cups, and the diameters of the zones of inhibition of bacterial growth are measured. In dilution methods (Foster and Woodruff, 1943; Rammelkamp, 1942), the smallest amount of penicillin which will completely inhibit bacterial growth in solid or liquid media is the standard with which unknowns are compared. In turbidimetric methods, a range is selected in which bacterial growth is proportional to penicillin concentration, and a standard curve is constructed from turbidimetric measurements of the bacterial suspensions. These methods, developed for the titration of penicillin lots during production, have had to be modified for clinical use because the concentrations in body fluids are much smaller than those which can be most conveniently measured during penicillin manufacture. A search through the literature reveals that heretofore only the dilution method has been used clinically. In connection with extensive clinical studies, attempts have been made in thi.s laboratory to adapt all three methods to the measurement of penicillin in body fluids. The results of these studies will be presented briefly.

Design and construction of a portable unite for measuring body-fluid components

Introduction: In the laboratory, the time required to measure body-fluids components is usually one to two working days. The laboratory methods require sample preparation and instrument cleaning after the sample reading. In emergency scenarios, the physician does not have much time to make a clinical decision. To solve these challenges, a portable system for measuring the body fluids components...

A novel chemical method for measuring ketone bodies in subclinical ketosis

Backgrounds: Subclinical ketosis can cause greater economic loss due to a lack of clinical symptoms. Objectives: The present study was aimed to design a chemical method for measuring serum ketone bodies in the affected subclinical cows. Methods: Acetoacetate concentrations were measured using a nitroprusside reaction and b-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) which was oxidized to acetoacetate using nan...

Benzethonium chloride method for proteins adapted to centrifugal analysis.

A benzethonium chloride method for measuring protein concentrations in several types of body fluids has been adapted to the Cobas Bio centrifugal analyzer. The ability of this analyzer to add two reagents stepwise, measuring absorbances after each addition, is essential for proper blanking of urine specimens. The method has excellent curve stability and precision and yields results that correla...

A Review of Laboratory Methods for Measuring Oxidative Stress

Introduction: Antioxidant defense system, including enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, protects cells from oxidative damage by neutralizing oxidant compounds. Increasing the production of oxidant species and decrease activity of antioxidant system causes oxidative stress. Liquid-chromatographic measurement of catecholamines and metabolites in plasma and urine.

In this general method for measuring the concentrations of neurotransmitters in body fluids by "high performance" liquid chromatography (HPLC), the procedures for extracting different biogenic amines from body fluids vary, but the basic chromatographic conditions are the same for all. We use citric/formic acid buffer as the mobile phase, a C18 column, and an electrochemical detector. Specificit...
