چکیده

We present neutron scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor of liquid helium confined to nanoscales in 25 and 34 Å mean pore diameter porous media over a range of pressures and temperatures. At low temperature and low pressure we observe well-defined phonon-roton P-R modes characteristic of liquid helium containing Bose-Einstein condensation BEC . As pressure is increased above 25 bars, we observe that the high energy P-R modes broaden and become unobservable. At pressure p=36.3–36.8 bars we observe loss of all modes, including the roton. The observation of modes up to 36.3–36.8 bars indicates that there is liquid containing BEC in the gelsils up to this pressure. The loss of modes at 36.3–36.8 bars indicates loss of BEC in the liquid or significant solidification in the gelsils at this pressure. At a pressure of 31.2 bars, we observe well-defined P-R modes up to T 1.4 K but loss of all modes above this temperature. At p 0, we have previously observed modes up to T =2.17 K. Yamamoto et al. have reported superfluidity in the same 25 Å gelsil up to a pressure pc=34 bars at T 0 K and to a maximum temperature of Tc=1.3 K at p 0. The transition at pc=34 bars and T 0 K was interpreted as a quantum phase transition. The present observation of P-R modes at temperatures well above Tc and pressures slightly above pc indicates that there is a phase containing BEC above Tc pc that is not superfluid. This is interpreted as a Bose glass phase containing islands of BEC that support P-R modes separated by normal liquid so that there is no phase coherence across the sample as needed for superflow. The Bose glass phase lies between the superfluid and normal liquid at all temperatures and pressures. Measurements of the static structure factor indicate that freezing in the gelsils is predominantly to an amorphous solid.

Probing the Bose-Glass–Superfluid Transition using Quantum Quenches of Disorder

We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of ex...

Quantum Orders and Symmetric Spin Liquids

A concept – quantum order – is introduced to describe a new kind of orders that generally appear in quantum states at zero temperature. Quantum orders that characterize universality classes of quantum states (described by complex ground state wave-functions) is much richer then classical orders that characterize universality classes of finite temperature classical states (described by positive ...

Bose-Metals and non-Fermi-liquid metals.dvi

Underlying the quantum theory of many-particle non-relativistic systems are the canonical quantum fluids superfluid phases of Bosons and Fermiliquid phases of Fermions. These two quantum phases of matter are extremely well understood, and are both accessible from models of weakly interacting particles. The only low energy excitation in a superfluid is the Goldstone mode of the broken particle n...

Broken U(1) gauge symmetry and excitations in Bose liquids

We derive the low-energy effective field theory at finite temperature of Bose condensed liquids (e.g., superfluid 4He) directly from the breakdown of the global gauge symmetry U(1). The theory can immediately yield the Landau quantum hydrodynamics. The Bogoliubov type spectrum of low-energy collective excitations is given in the zeroth order of this theory and the momentum and temperature depen...

Kaleidoscope of exotic quantum phases in a frustrated XY model.

The existence of quantum spin liquids was first conjectured by Pomeranchuk some 70 years ago, who argued that frustration in simple antiferromagnetic theories could result in a Fermi-liquid-like state for spinon excitations. Here we show that a simple quantum spin model on a honeycomb lattice hosts the long sought for Bose metal with a clearly identifiable Bose surface. The complete phase diagr...
