Deriving nationwide estimates of forest variables for Sweden using Landsat

چکیده

The use of satellite data in forest inventories makes it possible to do a wall-to-wall mapping of forest variables. This type of raster databases with estimated forest variables provides a great potential for planning how the forest resources should be utilized, and can be used as input ecological models. There are different remote sensing methods that can be used to map forest resources. One is the k-nearest neighbours (kNN) method that has been successfully tested and evaluated in different countries. In this method, multiple forest variables are simultaneously calculated for individual pixels as weighted mean values of spectrally nearby field samples. The objective of this project is to derive raster databases with estimates of forest variables, for example volume and tree height, for the whole of Sweden. This is done by combing Landsat ETM+ data and field data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) using the kNN algorithm. Approximately 40 Landsat ETM+ scenes will be used in the project. The accuracy obtained for estimated variables can be considered poor on the pixel level. However, the accuracy will improve quickly when estimated variables are aggregated into larger areas. In Sweden, the accuracy for stem volume per hectare, for example, will be in the order of 15 % (RMSE), when calculated for an area of approximately 150 ha. The project is carried out in co-operation with the Swedish National Board of Forestry, the Regional Forestry Boards, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Satellite Data Time Series for Forecasting, Habiat Modelling and Visualisation of the Managed Boreal Forest Landscape

Satellite data of Landsat and SPOT type are operationally used in Sweden for nationwide forest mapping; for detection of clear felled areas and for checking the need for deciduous shrub cleaning in young forest plantations. The data are also used by the Sami people for mapping areas of interest for reindeer grazing. The Swedish forest agency has since 1999 acquired a yearly and nationwide set o...

Estimation of Airborne Lidar-Derived Tropical Forest Canopy Height Using Landsat Time Series in Cambodia

In this study, we test and demonstrate the utility of disturbance and recovery information derived from annual Landsat time series to predict current forest vertical structure (as compared to the more common approaches, that consider a sample of airborne Lidar and single-date Landsat derived variables). Mean Canopy Height (MCH) was estimated separately using single date, time series, and the co...

Investigation of the Forest and Pasture Cover Changes in Arasbaran Ecosystem during 34 years, Using Remote Sensing Technique

Estimating the extent of changes in forest and rangelands land cover, leads to a clear understanding of the growth or decline of these natural areas and planning for effective protection of these national assets. The aim of current study was to reveal the trend of land-use changes in the Dizmar protected area of Arasbaran vegetative area, using MSS sensor of Landsat-5 for 1984, ETM+ sensor of L...

Mapping Forest Height in Alaska Using GLAS, Landsat Composites, and Airborne LiDAR

Vegetation structure, including forest canopy height, is an important input variable to fire behavior modeling systems for simulating wildfire behavior. As such, forest canopy height is one of a nationwide suite of products generated by the LANDFIRE program. In the past, LANDFIRE has relied on a combination of field observations and Landsat imagery to develop existing vegetation structure produ...
