The Ste20 kinase misshapen is essential for the invasive behaviour of ovarian epithelial cells in Drosophila.

چکیده
Stationary-to-migratory transitions of epithelial cells have a key role in development and tumour progression. Border cell migration is a powerful system in which to investigate this transition in living organisms. Here, we identify the Ste20-like kinase misshapen (msn) as a novel regulator of border-cell migration in Drosophila. Expression of msn in border cells is independent of the transcription factor slow border cells and of inputs from all pathways that are known to control border-cell migration. The msn gene functions to modulate the levels and/or distribution of Drosophila E-cadherin to promote the invasive migratory behaviour of border cells.

The Drosophila STE20-like kinase misshapen is required downstream of the Frizzled receptor in planar polarity signaling.
The Drosophila misshapen (msn) gene is a member of the STE20 kinase family. We show that msn acts in the Frizzled (Fz) mediated epithelial planar polarity (EPP) signaling pathway in eyes and wings. Both msn loss- and gain-of-function result in defective ommatidial polarity and wing hair formation. Genetic and biochemical analyses indicate that msn acts downstream of fz and dishevelled (dsh) in ...
متن کاملCoordinated cell-shape changes control epithelial movement in zebrafish and Drosophila.
Epithelial morphogenesis depends on coordinated changes in cell shape, a process that is still poorly understood. During zebrafish epiboly and Drosophila dorsal closure, cell-shape changes at the epithelial margin are of critical importance. Here evidence is provided for a conserved mechanism of local actin and myosin 2 recruitment during theses events. It was found that during epiboly of the z...
متن کاملA Screen for Round Egg Mutants in Drosophila Identifies Tricornered, Furry, and Misshapen as Regulators of Egg Chamber Elongation
The elongation of tissues and organs during embryonic development results from the coordinate polarization of cell behaviors with respect to the elongation axis. Within the Drosophila melanogaster ovary, initially spherical egg chambers lengthen dramatically as they develop to create the elliptical shape of the mature egg. This morphogenesis depends on an unusual form of planar polarity within ...
متن کاملThe Ste20-like kinase misshapen functions together with Bicaudal-D and dynein in driving nuclear migration in the developing drosophila eye
Nuclear translocation, driven by the motility apparatus consisting of the cytoplasmic dynein motor and microtubules, is essential for cell migration during embryonic development. Bicaudal-D (Bic-D), an evolutionarily conserved dynein-interacting protein, is required for developmental control of nuclear migration in Drosophila. Nothing is known about the signaling events that coordinate the func...
متن کاملThe Drosophila Ste20-related kinase misshapen is required for embryonic dorsal closure and acts through a JNK MAPK module on an evolutionarily conserved signaling pathway.
Dorsal closure in the Drosophila embryo occurs during the later stages of embryogenesis and involves changes in cell shape leading to the juxtaposition and subsequent adherence of the lateral epidermal primordia over the amnioserosa. Dorsal closure requires the activation of a conserved c-jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) module, as it is blocked by null mu...
