TotectTM: A New Agent for Treating Anthracycline Extravasation
نویسنده
چکیده
Anthracycline chemotherapy agents bind to DNA and cause cell death when they extravasate into healthy tissue. Although many approaches to managing extravasations have been studied and reported, data from two prospective clinical trials suggest that TotectTM (dexrazoxane for injection, TopoTarget USA, Inc.) is an effective anthracycline extravasation treatment. Only 1 of 54 patients with doxorubicin or epirubicin biopsy-confi rmed extravasations treated with Totect developed tissue necrosis. Because nurses are on the forefront of extravasation prevention and management, they need to be knowledgeable about this new agent and how it is administered. treatment of an intrathoracic epirubicin extravasation [3]. Approximately 140 mg of epirubicin extravasated into the pleural space when the tip of an implanted port catheter became misplaced. A pleural drain was inserted and the pleural cavity was immediately flushed with 1000 ml normal saline on 2 consecutive days. Dexrazoxane was also infused intravenously for the first three consecutive days...

Management of anthracycline extravasation is problematic and most reports are anecdotal. On September 6, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Totect 500 mg (dexrazoxane hydrochloride for injection) for the treatment of extravasation resulting from i.v. anthracycline chemotherapy. In two studies, a total of 57 evaluable patients experienced extravasation from peripheral vein or c...

The application of anthracyclines in anticancer therapy may result in accidental extravasation injury and can be a serious complication of their use. Tissue necrosis with skin ulceration is a possible outcome in the inadvertent extravasation of anthracyclines during intravenous administration. Until recently, there has been no effective treatment against the devastating effect of extravasated a...

An accidental extravasation of anthracycline-containing chemotherapy is a feared complication that may lead to necrosis and severe tissue destruction. For four decades, much effort has been done to prevent and treat this devastating condition. Savene has recently been proved to be very effective, and is the only approved treatment against anthracyline extravasation. It is thus now widely recomm...
