21 Polar and ice-edge marine systems

چکیده
Cold, seasonal and dominated by ice, the two polar regions are similar in many ways. Oceanographically, however, they are very different. The Arctic is a deep basin surrounded almost completely by extensive shallow continental shelves and continental land masses. Large river systems (Chapter 2) discharge significant volumes of fresh water and sediment into the Arctic basin, some of them carrying substantial pollution, and exchange with the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans is highly constrained. In direct contrast, the Antarctic is a single isolated land mass surrounded on all sides by a deep ocean contiguous with the three great ocean basins (Fig. 21.1). Climate change has been identified as the key environmental trend in both polar regions, with the most likely effect in the marine environment being mediated through changes in sea-ice dynamics (Clarke & Harris 2003) (Table 21.1). The polar regions play a critical role in the

CERTAIN TYPES OF EDGE m-POLAR FUZZY GRAPHS
In this research paper, we present a novel frame work for handling $m$-polar information by combining the theory of $m-$polar fuzzy sets with graphs. We introduce certain types of edge regular $m-$polar fuzzy graphs and edge irregular $m-$polar fuzzy graphs. We describe some useful properties of edge regular, strongly edge irregular and strongly edge totally irregular $m-$polar fuzzy graphs. W...
متن کاملThe sea-level fingerprints of ice-sheet collapse during interglacial periods
Studies of sea level during previous interglacials provide insight into the stability of polar ice sheets in the face of global climate change. Commonly, these studies correct ancient sea-level highstands for the contaminating effect of isostatic adjustment associated with past ice age cycles, and interpret the residuals as being equivalent to the peak eustatic sea level associated with excess ...
متن کاملSurvival and breeding of polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea in relation to sea ice.
1. Observed and predicted declines in Arctic sea ice have raised concerns about marine mammals. In May 2008, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed polar bears (Ursus maritimus) - one of the most ice-dependent marine mammals - as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. 2. We evaluated the effects of sea ice conditions on vital rates (survival and breeding probabilities) for polar bears...
متن کاملIce sheets viewed from the ocean: the contribution of marine science to understanding modern and past ice sheets.
Over the last two decades, marine science, aided by technological advances in sediment coring, geophysical imaging and remotely operated submersibles, has played a major role in the investigation of contemporary and former ice sheets. Notable advances have been achieved with respect to reconstructing the extent and flow dynamics of the large polar ice sheets and their mid-latitude counterparts ...
