چکیده

When tailored to make durable thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), the Solution Precursor Plasma Spray (SPPS) process produces a microstructure containing uniformly vertical cracks. These cracks provide a high degree of strain tolerance to the ceramic top coat. In order to understand the formation of vertical crack in SPPS process, coatings of various thicknesses were deposited on a variety of substrates with vastly different thermal properties. These coatings were characterized in the as-sprayed state and after heat treatment. It has been determined that the tensile stress derived from the pyrolysis of precursor occurring during coating deposition or post heat-treatment is the major driving force for the formation of vertical cracks in SPPS TBCs. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Thermal Conductivity Analysis and Lifetime Testing of Suspension Plasma-Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings

Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) has become an interesting method for the production of thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine components. The development of the SPS process has led to structures with segmented vertical cracks or column-like structures that can imitate strain-tolerant air plasma spraying (APS) or electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) coatings. Additionally, SPS coa...

THE EFFECTS OF PLASMA SPRAY PARAMETERS ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND PHASE COMPOSITION OF THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS MADE BY SPPS PROCESS

In this paper the effect of plasma spray parameters, atomizing gas and substrate preheat temperature on microstructure and phase composition of YSZ coatings produced by SPPS process have been investigated. The experimental results showed that increasing the power of plasma, using hydrogen as the precursor atomizing gas and increasing substrate preheat temperature decrease the amount of non-pyro...

Comparative Study of Plasma Sprayed Yittria and Ceria Stabilized Zirconia Properties

Thermal Barrier Coatings are subjected to spallation and destabilization due to hot corrosion.Recently, Ceria Stabilized Zirconia (CSZ)-based TBCs have been intensively investigated for the YSZreplacement because CSZ has a much lower thermal conductivity and a higher expected thermalexpansion coefficient than those of YSZ. In this research, Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) andceria stabilized z...

In situ Particle Generation and Splat Formation During Solution Precursor Plasma Spraying of YttriaStabilized Zirconia Coatings

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) based on Yttria-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) deposited by the solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) technique have been claimed to exhibit superior durability compared to conventional plasma spraying and even electron-beam physical vapor deposition. This has been attributed to the interesting features, like vertical cracks, nanosized pores, and fine splats that are...

AN INVESTIGATION ON EFFECT OF BOND COAT REPLACEMENT ON HOT CORROSION PROPERTIES OF THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS

In the present study NiCrAlY bond coating layer was produced by electroplating against common atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Both types of the bond coats were applied on IN738LC base metal then, the YSZ (ZrO2-8% Y2O3) thermal barrier top layer was coated by atmospheric plasma spray technique. Hot corrosion is one of the main destructive factors in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) which come ...
