Experimental Determination of Spinel / Melt , Olivine / Melt

چکیده
Introduction Experimental studies have identified spinels as important hosts phases for many of the highly siderophile elements (HSE) [1-4]. Yet experimental studies involving chromite or Cr-rich spinel have been lacking. Experimental studies of partitioning of HSEs between silicate, oxides and silicate melt are plagued by low solubilities and the presence of small metallic nuggets at oxygen fugacities relevant to magmas, which interfere with analysis of the phases of interest [5]. We have circumvented these problems in two ways: 1) performing experiments at oxidized conditions, which are still relevant to natural systems but in which nuggets are not observed, and 2) analysis of run products with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), allowing a combination of high sensitivity and good spatial resolution.

Partitioning of Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Ir, and Au between Cr-bearing spinel, olivine, pyroxene and silicate melts
A series of high temperature experiments was undertaken to study partitioning of several highly siderophile elements (HSE; Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, Pt and Au) between Cr-rich spinel, olivine, pyroxene and silicate melt. Runs were carried out on a Hawaiian ankaramite, a synthetic eucrite basalt, and a DiAn eutectic melt, at one bar, 19 kbar, and 20 kbar, respectively, in the temperature range of ...

[1] Phase equilibrium experiments on primitive Miocene olivine leucitite (Bb-107) from the Qiangtang terrane of the Tibetan Plateau were performed from 1.0 to 2.2 GPa and 1270 to 1440 C. The composition is multiply saturated with olivine and clinopyroxene from 1.2 to 2.2 GPa and 1340 C under nominally anhydrous conditions. Phase assemblages in the experiments have been used to model the effects...

Abst rac t -This study investigates the effects of variations in the fugacities of oxygen and sulfur on the partitioning of first series transition metals (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) and W among coexisting sulfide melt, silicate melt, and olivine. Experiments were performed at 1 atm pressure, 1350°C, with the fugacities of oxygen and sulfur controlled by mixing CO2, CO, and SO2 gases. Start...

[1] Ultramafic xenoliths of spinel dunite, harzburgite, lherzolite, amphibole/phlogopite-bearing pyroxenite, and clinopyroxenite occur in andesitic pyroclastic debris from the 1964 eruption of Shiveluch volcano, Kamchatka. Peridotites have coarse/protogranular, porphyroclastic, and granuloblastic textures, abundant kink-banded olivine, and refractory mineral compositions with forsteritic olivin...

Ultramafic-mafic rocks from Makrirrakhi, Central Greece exhibit features of an original ophiolite sequence which contains depleted mantle material, ultramafic containing partial melt textures and possibly the marie "pluton" which resulted from the coalescing of these partial melt segregations. Considerable mineralogical variation exists: unzoned olivine crystals range in composition from FoTs_s...
