Star Clusters in Local Group Galaxies – Impact of Environment on Their Evolution and Survival
نویسنده
چکیده
Star clusters are found in ∼40% of the Local Group galaxies. Their properties are reviewed. The impact of galaxy environment on the evolution and survival of star clusters is discussed. Possible evidence for cluster formation triggered by galaxy interactions, gradients in cluster size, metallicity and stellar content with galactocentric radius and variations as a function of galaxy type are briefly summarized.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کاملImpact of Reionization on the Stellar Populations of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies
Cold dark matter models for galaxy formation predict that low-mass systems will be the first sites of star formation. As these objects have shallow gravitational potential wells, the subsequent growth of their stellar populations may be halted by heating and gas loss due to reionization. This effect has been suggested to have profoundly influenced properties of present-day dwarf galaxies, inclu...

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Star Formation Activity in Galaxies and Its Dependence on Environment
We study how the proportion of star-forming galaxies evolves between z = 0.8 and z = 0 as a function of galaxy environment, using the [OII] line in emission as a signature of ongoing star formation. Our high-z dataset comprises 16 clusters, 10 groups and another 250 galaxies in poorer groups and the field at z = 0.4 − 0.8 from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey, plus another 9 massive clusters at s...
متن کاملWhen Efficient Star Formation Drives Cluster Formation
We investigate the impact of the star formation efficiency in cluster-forming-cores (i.e. local SFE) on the evolution of the mass in star clusters over the age range 1-100Myr, when star clusters undergo their infant weight-loss/mortality phase. Our model builds on the N -body simulation grid of Baumgardt & Kroupa (2007). Assuming a constant formation rate of gas-embedded clusters and a weak tid...
