چکیده

Giant planets orbiting stars other than the Sun are clearly detectable through precise radial-velocity measurements of the orbital reflex motion of the parent star. In the four years since the discovery 1 of the companion to the star 51 Peg, similar low-amplitude " Doppler star wobbles " have revealed the presence of some 20 planets orbiting nearby solar-type stars. Several of these newly-discovered planets 2, 3, 4 are very close to their parent stars, in orbits with periods of only a few days. Being an indirect technique, however, the reflex-velocity method has little to say about the sizes or compositions of the planets, and can only place lower limits on their masses. Here we report the use of high-resolution optical spectroscopy to achieve a probable detection of the 1

A new upper limit on the reflected starlight from τ Bootis b

Using improved doppler tomographic signal-analysis techniques we have carried out a deep search for starlight reflected from the giant planet orbiting the star τ Bootis. We combined echelle spectra secured at the 4.2 m William Herschel telescope in 1998 and 1999 (which yielded a tentative detection of a reflected starlight component from the orbiting companion) with new data obtained in 2000 (w...

An Upper Limit on the Reflected Light from the Planet Orbiting the Star Τ Bootis

The planet orbiting τ Boo at a separation of 0.046 AU could produce a reflected light flux as bright as 1× 10 relative to that of the star. A spectrum of the system will contain a reflected light component which varies in amplitude and Doppler-shift as the planet orbits the star. Assuming the secondary spectrum is primarily the reflected stellar spectrum, we can limit the relative reflected lig...

Optical images of an exosolar planet 25 light-years from Earth.

Fomalhaut, a bright star 7.7 parsecs (25 light-years) from Earth, harbors a belt of cold dust with a structure consistent with gravitational sculpting by an orbiting planet. Here, we present optical observations of an exoplanet candidate, Fomalhaut b. Fomalhaut b lies about 119 astronomical units (AU) from the star and 18 AU of the dust belt, matching predictions of its location. Hubble Space T...

A stringent upper limit to 18 cm radio emission from the extrasolar planet system τ Boötis

Context. It has been speculated for many years that some extrasolar planets may emit strong cyclotron emission at low radio frequencies in the range 10−100 MHz. Despite several attempts no such emission has yet been seen. Aims. The hot Jupiter system τ Boötis is one of the nearest (d = 15 pc) exoplanets known to date. The gravitational influence of this massive hot Jupiter (M = 6 Mjup) has lock...
