چکیده
We examined the induction of dicentrics in human lymphocytes irradiated in vitro with nearly monoenergetic neutrons at energies in the range of 36 keV-15.0 MeV and monochromatic X-rays in the range of 1.8 keV-40 keV. For the assessment of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) both 220 kV X-rays and Co γ-rays were used as reference radiations. To avoid potential confounding factors that would influence the outcome of the experiments, only blood from one individual was used. The neutron and photon RBE culture conditions ensured that the chromosome analysis could be performed exclusively in metaphases of the first cell cycle in vitro. For the reference radiation of 220 kV X-rays, the values of the low-dose RBE of neutrons were found to increase from 16.6 (En = 36 keV) to the maximum value of 23.4 (En = 385 keV) with a further decrease to 4.1 (En = 14.6 MeV), as well as a strong indication for a systematic change of the low-dose RBE of photons with an increase from 0.59 (E = 40 keV) to 2.1 (E = 6.9 keV) and a slight tendency to drop with further decrease of energy. For Co γ-rays utilized as the reference radiation, the corresponding RBE values were found to be higher by a factor of 4. These results agree well – with some restrictions – with previously published large data sets of three laboratories.

An investigation of neutron direct damages at energies of 0.1-2 MeV on the DNA molecules with atomic structure deduced using Geant4 toolkit
This study proposes a method to estimate RBE of fast neutrons using Monte Carlo simulations. This approach is based on the combination of an atomic resolution DNA geometrical model and Monte Carlo simulations for tracking particles. Atomic positions were extracted from the Protein Data Bank. The GEANT4 code was used for tracking the secondary particles generated by fast neutrons during their in...

Objective(s): In this study we evaluate the impact of the different aspects of Gold Nano-Particles (GNPs) on the target absorptive Dose Enhancement Factor (DEF) during external targeted radiotherapy with photon beams ranging from kilovolt to megavolt energies using Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: We have simulated the interaction of photon beams wi...
متن کاملRecoil proton, alpha particle, and heavy ion impacts on microdosimetry and RBE of fast neutrons: analysis of kerma spectra calculated by Monte Carlo simulation.
Fast neutrons (FN) have a higher radio-biological effectiveness (RBE) compared with photons, however the mechanism of this increase remains a controversial issue. RBE variations are seen among various FN facilities and at the same facility when different tissue depths or thicknesses of hardening filters are used. These variations lead to uncertainties in dose reporting as well as in the compari...
متن کاملCalculated yields and slowing-down spectra for electrons in liquid water: implications for electron and photon RBE.
Detailed Monte Carlo calculations have been carried out of slowing-down spectra and yields for a number of end-points for electrons in liquid water. These investigations were made to study differences in physical effects of different low-LET radiations and implications for RBE. Initial electron energies from 1 keV to 1 MeV were used, and all secondary electrons were followed in the computations...
متن کاملProduction mechanisms of leptons, photons, and hadrons and their possible feedback close to lightning leaders
It has been discussed that lightning flashes emit high-energy electrons, positrons, photons, and neutrons with single energies of several tens of MeV. In the first part of this paper we study the absorption of neutron beams in the atmosphere. We initiate neutron beams of initial energies of 350 keV, 10 MeV, and 20 MeV at source altitudes of 4 km and 16 km upward and downward and see that in all...
