A Formal Model for Optimizing Dynamic Service Composition

Run-time service composition has been a goal of the Service-Oriented Architecture paradigm for many years, and several projects have demonstrated means of doing this composition. However, none of these efforts has focused on optimizing the composition of available services to ensure the user is getting a composition that meets his or her needs or falls within constraints that the user must conform to. This paper describes a model for optimizing service composition, beginning with a formal definition of the service composition problem and culminating in an implementation using the Optimization Programming Language.
