چکیده

An optimization methodology based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) has been developed for simultaneous optimization of water and energy (SOWE) in industrial processes. The superstructure integrates non-water process thermal streams and optimizes the consumption of water, while maximizing internal heat recovery to reduce thermal utility consumption. To address the complexity of water and energy stream distribution in pulp and paper processes, three features have been incorporated in the proposed SOWE method: (a) Non-Isothermal Mixing (NIM) has been considered through different locations to reduce the number of thermal streams and decrease the investment cost by avoiding unnecessary investment on heat exchangers; (b) the concept of restricted matches combined with water tanks has been added to the superstructure; and (c) the Integer-Cut Constraint technique has been combined with the MILP model to systematically generate a set of optimal solutions to support the decision-making for cost-effective configurations. The performance of the proposed improved MILP approach has been evaluated using several examples from the literature and applied to a Canadian softwood Kraft pulping mill as an industrial case study. The results indicate that this

Effect of Hardwoods Characteristics on Kraft Pulping Process: Emphasis on Lignin Structure

In an attempt to explain variations in delignification behaviors among different hardwood species, the kraft pulping delignification rates of Eucalyptus urograndis, E. nitens, E. globulus, sweet gum, maple, red oak, birch, red alder, cottonwood, and acacia were obtained and correlated with their respective lignin chemical structures. Since H-factor for hardwood is calculated based on the softwo...

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

Presence of Hardwood Chips and Its Impact on Pulp Strength Properties in the Production of Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp

The effect of hardwood admixture (15-25% birch or aspen) in kraft cooking on the strength properties of the fully bleached pulp was investigated. Results obtained from both laband mill-processed ECF bleached pulps showed that adding 15-25% birch or aspen to the production of fully bleached softwood kraft pulp had a minor effect on the strength properties. No significant effect was observed for ...
