Annual Cycles of Tropospheric Water Vapor

چکیده
To understand better the annual cycles of atmospheric humidity, radiosonde data were used to create climatologies of temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and precipitable water in the lower troposphere for 56 locations around the world for the period 1973-1990. On the basis of the annual ranges of relative humidity at the surface and at the 850, 700, and 500 mbar levels and the ratio of the annual maximum to minimum surface to 500-mbar precipitable water, we have defined five humidity regimes: (1) middleand high-latitude continental, (2) middleand high-latitude oceanic, (3) midlatitude monsoon, (4) tropical oceanic, and (5) tropical monsoon. For each regime we describe the annual cycles of temperature and humidity variables and discuss phase relationships among them. Relative humidity ranges are small in the first two regimes, where precipitable water and temperature vary in phase. Relative humidity ranges in the other three regimes are moderate to large, and in the tropics the annual march of horizontal moisture advection and vertical convection, not temperature, controls seasonal humidity variations. These results suggest that the assumption of constant relative humidity made in some climate models is not always justified and that precipitable water is not a strong function of temperature in the tropics.

Climate Model-Simulated Diurnal Cycles in HIRS Clear-Sky Brightness Temperatures
Clear-sky brightness temperature measurements from the High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) are simulated with two climate models via a radiative transfer code. The models are sampled along the HIRS orbit paths to derive diurnal climatologies of simulated brightness temperature analogous to an existing climatology based on HIRS observations. Simulated and observed climatologies are...
متن کاملEstimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter
Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...
متن کاملUsing HIRS Observations to Construct Long-Term Global Temperature and Water Vapor Profile Time Series
Previous work has generated a time series of cloud-cleared dataset at the HIRS original swath resolution (Jackson and Bates, 2001). Using an inter-satellite calibrated version of the dataset, Bates and Jackson (2001) and Bates et al. (2001) examined the variability of upper tropospheric humidity. These studies showed that while the inter-annual variability of spatial fields was dominated by the...
متن کاملInterpretation of TOVS Water Vapor Radiances Using a Random Strong Line Model
This study illustrates the application of a random strong line (RSL) model of radiative transfer to the interpretation of satellite observations of the upwelling radiation in the 6.3 µm water vapor absorption band. The model, based upon an assemblage of randomly overlapped, strongly absorbing, pressure broadened lines, is compared to detailed radiative transfer calculations of the upper (6.7 µm...
متن کاملGlobal monitoring of tropospheric water vapor with GPS radio occultation aboard CHAMP
The paper deals with application of GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements aboard CHAMP for the retrieval of tropospheric water vapor profiles. The GPS RO technique provides a powerful tool for atmospheric sounding which requires no calibration, is not affected by clouds, aerosols or precipitation, and provides an almost uniform global coverage. We briefly overview data processing and retrieva...
