چکیده

Figure 1. A: Map of Charleston-Nebo salient and northernmost Book Cliffs showing rock units, thrust faults (dashed where buried), key seismic coverage (gray lines), measured stratigraphic sections (1–7; 8 is location of additional Blackhawk sandstone samples), and wells. Rock units: KTs—Cretaceous–Tertiary strata (North Horn and younger formations), Kmv—Cretaceous Mesaverde Group (Blackhawk, Castlegate, and Price River Formations; dot pattern), Km— Cretaceous Mancos Shale, PPoq—Pennsylvanian–Permian Oquirrh Group, M—Mississippian, pC–C—Precambrian–Cambrian. Inset map shows Sevier thrust front, Laramide basement uplifts, and Canyon Range (CRT) and Pavant thrusts (PT). B: Chronostratigraphic chart for Campanian–Maastrichtian deposits across central Utah, modified from Robinson and Slingerland (1998). Vertical ruled pattern denotes nondepositional or erosional hiatus. ABSTRACT Newly released reflection seismic and borehole data, combined with sedimentological, provenance, and biostratigraphic data from Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene strata in the proximal part of the Cordilleran foreland-basin system in Utah, establish the nature of tectonic controls on stratigraphic sequences in the proximal to distal foreland basin. During Campanian time, coarse-grained sand and gravel were derived from the internally shortening CharlestonNebo salient of the Sevier thrust belt. A rapid, regional Campanian progradational event in the distal foreland basin (.200 km from the thrust belt in ,8 m.y.) can be tied directly to active thrustgenerated growth structures and an influx of quartzose detritus derived from the Charleston-Nebo salient. Eustatic sea-level variation exerted a minimal role in sequence progradation.

Long-term sediment accumulation in the Middle Jurassic–early Eocene Cordilleran retroarc foreland-basin system

The late Middle Jurassic–early Eocene (;120 m.y.) sediment-accumulation history of the Cordilleran foreland basin in northern Utah exhibits a sigmoidal pattern on a rate vs. time plot, with moderate rates of accumulation during late Middle Jurassic, very low net rates during Late Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous, increasingly rapid rates during Earlymiddle Cretaceous, and low rates during Late Cret...

Foreland basin systems

A foreland basin system is defined as: (a) an elongate region of potential sediment accommodation that forms on continental crust between a contractional orogenic belt and the adjacent craton, mainly in response to geodynamic processes related to subduction and the resulting peripheral or retroarc fold-thrust belt; (b) it consists of four discrete depozones, referred to as the wedge-top, forede...

Thrusting and gravel progradation in foreland basins: A test of post-thrusting gravel dispersal

The use of gravels as syntectonic indicators of thrusting has recently been questioned by foreland-basin models that assign gravels to a post-thrusting interval of progradation, except in very proximal areas. On the basis of precise temporal control provided by magnetostratigraphically dated sections, the history of gravel progradation after a major thrusting and uplift event in the northwester...

Tectonosedimentary evolution of the basins in Central Alborz, Iran

Evidence of at least ten different tectonic- controlled sedimentary basins can be recognized in the central part of the Alborz Mountains in the Middle part of the Alpine-Himalayan belt. They formed from Neoprotrozoic to recent time as the results of the relative plate motion in southwest of Asia in Tethyan realm. The basins include: (1) Prototethys Late Neo-Proterozoic to Early Ordovician epi-c...

Foreland basin stratigraphic control on thrust belt evolution

The link between orogenic activity and foreland basin stratigraphy is well established; however, potential controls by foreland basin stratigraphy on thrust belt architecture have not been fully evaluated. Mechanical properties of typical foreland basin stratigraphic successions influence the structural development of fold-thrust belts in predictable ways. Fundamental features of foreland basin...
