Intonation in Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
Intonation, when used in a narrow sense, refers to fundamental frequency (henceforth F0) patterns in speech that convey information beyond lexical meanings. In a broader sense, intonation also includes other suprasegmental patterns such as duration, intensity and voice quality, etc., that also convey non-lexical meanings. This article will focus mainly on the former, because, as will be seen, F0 is the main carrier of non-lexical meaning, although for boundary marking, duration likely plays a major role.

Confusability of Chinese Intonation
Do lexical tones interfere with the realization of intonation types? Given that tone and intonation both use F0 as a primary cue, can a listener reliably identify statements and questions when some of the channel capacity is taken up by lexical tones? We study this issue through a perception test on a carefully designed and obtained intonation corpus on Mandarin Chinese. Our study shows the fol...
متن کاملComparison of Declarative and Interrogative Intonation in Chinese
We model the differences between declarative and interrogative intonation in Chinese with Stem-ML, an intonation description language combined with an algorithm for translating tags into quantitative prosody. Our study shows that the diverse surface patterns can be accounted for by two consistent gestures: 1. Interrogative intonation has a higher phrase curve than declarative intonation; 2. Sen...
متن کاملFocus and Boundary in Chinese Intonation
Based on the previous studies on Chinese intonation and our own production data, we propose a model of Chinese intonation in which the surface f0 contours of a prosodic phrase (PP) can be modeled by the combined effects of focus stress and boundary tones. The observed patterns are based on the statistical analysis of the data. Experiment results indicate that narrowly focused syllables have a s...
متن کاملA cross-linguistic fMRI study of perception of intonation and emotion in Chinese.
Conflicting data from neurobehavioral studies of the perception of intonation (linguistic) and emotion (affective) in spoken language highlight the need to further examine how functional attributes of prosodic stimuli are related to hemispheric differences in processing capacity. Because of similarities in their acoustic profiles, intonation and emotion permit us to assess to what extent hemisp...
متن کاملIntonation Phrasing in Chinese EFL Learners’ Read Speech
Intonation phrasing refers to the system of intonation choices that a speaker has when associating complete intonation patterns with a text. The number of patterns and the boundaries may vary and convey different meanings. This study investigates the intonation phrasing patterns in Chinese EFL learners’ read speech. The recordings of 45 Chinese students and 8 British native speakers were annota...
متن کاملA Preliminary Analysis of Focus and Ending in Chinese Intonation
The present paper investigates the issue of focus types and the ending situations in Chinese declarative and interrogative intonations. Differing only in focus of each, 5 statement sentences and 5 interrogative sentences with the same words and the same syntax in Chinese are designed for the experiment. A male Standard Chinese speaker reads them in random order three times. The results show tha...
