An improved continuum skin and proximity effect model for hexagonally packed wires
نویسنده
چکیده
This work presents approximate but closed-form expressions for “effective” complexvalued magnetic permeability and electric conductivity that represent the effects of proximity and skin effect losses in wound coil with hexagonally packed wires. Previous work is extended by providing improved accuracy versus finite element results for effective permeability and by providing an expression for effective conductivity, which was previously neglected. These material properties can then be used in 2D/axisymmetric finite element models in which the coil is modeled as a coarsely meshed, homogeneous region (i.e. removing the need for modeling each turn in the coil).

Continuum Representation of Wound Coils via an Equivalent Foil Approach
Continuum methods for representing skin and proximity effects in round-wire windings have been previously presented in the literature. Although the economy of these methods is well-established, the existing approaches require preliminary numerical field computations to determine the equivalent material properties of the wound region. The present work derives approximate but closed-form expressi...
متن کاملHexagonally packed DNA within bacteriophage T7 stabilized by curvature stress.
A continuum computation is proposed for the bending stress stabilizing DNA that is hexagonally packed within bacteriophage T7. Because the inner radius of the DNA spool is rather small, the stress of the curved DNA genome is strong enough to balance its electrostatic self-repulsion so as to form a stable hexagonal phase. The theory is in accord with the microscopically determined structure of b...
متن کاملAn Improved Calculation of Proximity-Effect Loss in High-Frequency Windings of Round Conductors
The two best-known methods for calculating highfrequency winding loss in round-wire windings—the Dowell method and the Ferreira method—give significantly different results at high frequency. We apply 2-D finite-element method (FEM) simulations to evaluate the accuracy of each method for predicting proximity-effect losses. We find that both methods can have substantial errors, exceeding 60%. The...
متن کاملImpurity Scattering in Carbon Nanotubes with Superconducting Pair Correlations
Effects of the superconducting pair potential on the impurity scattering processes in metallic carbon nanotubes are studied theoretically. The backward scattering of electrons vanishes in the normal state. In the presence of the superconducting pair correlations, the backward scatterings of electronand hole-like quasiparticles vanish, too. The impurity gives rise to backward scatterings of hole...
متن کاملA Continuum Model For Stone-wales Defected Carbon Nanotubes
In this paper, a continuum model is proposed so that a Stone-Wales (SW) defected carbon nanotube (CNT) is replaced by an initial circumferential crack in a continuum cylindrical shell. For this purpose, the critical energy release rate and then the fracture toughness of a defected CNT are calculated using the results of an existing atomistic-based continuum finite element simulation. Finally, t...
