Estimating Bernoulli trial probability from a small sample

چکیده
The standard textbook method for estimating the probability of a biased coin from finite tosses implicitly assumes the sample sizes are large and gives incorrect results for small samples. We describe the exact solution, which is correct for any sample size.

The Effect of Estimation Error on Risk-adjusted Bernoulli GEWMA Control Chart in Multistage Healthcare Processes
Background and objectives: Risk-adjusted Bernoulli control chart is one of the main tools for monitoring multistage healthcare processes to achieve higher performance and effectiveness in healthcare settings. Using parameter estimates can lead to significantly deteriorate chart performance. However, so far, the effect of estimation error on this chart in which healthcare ...
متن کاملVariable Selection in Measurement Error Models.
Measurement error data or errors-in-variable data are often collected in many studies. Natural criterion functions are often unavailable for general functional measurement error models due to the lack of information on the distribution of the unobservable covariates. Typically, the parameter estimation is via solving estimating equations. In addition, the construction of such estimating equatio...
متن کاملMinimax Estimation of a Variance
The nonparametric problem of estimating a variance based on a sample of size n from a univariate distribution which has a known bounded range but is otherwise arbitrary is treated. For squared error loss, a certain linear function of the sample variance is seen to be minimax for each n from 2 through 13, except n = 4. For squared error loss weighted by the reciprocal of the variance, a constant...
متن کاملSequentially Deciding Between Two Experiments for Estimating a Common Success Probability
To estimate a success probability p, two experiments are available: individual Bernoulli(p) trials or the product of r individual Bernoulli(p) trials. This problem has its roots in reliability where either single components can be tested or a system of r identical components can be tested. A total of N experiments can be performed, and the problem is to sequentially select some combination (all...
متن کاملFurther Perceptions of Probability
Hyman Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis (Minsky, 1977) proposes that cyclicality in the financial market is caused by a rational process of learning and inference of probabilities. Although a substantial literature is available on the perception of stationary probability distributions, the learning of non-stationary distributions has received less interest. The purpose of this thesis is...
