On the Chemical Changes Associated with Metamorphosis in a Beetle (tenebrio Molitor L.)
نویسنده
چکیده
CERTAIN changes in the chief chemical constituents of tissues have been studied during the metamorphosis of Lucilia sericata Meigan, commonly known as the green-bottle or sheep blow-fly by Evans (3). Since histolysis and histogenesis are very well marked in this species, it was thought advisable to extend the study to a member of a lower order in which the changes are not so drastic. A suitable subject for the investigation was found in the mealworm, Tenebrio molitor L. This species has a prepupal period of approximately two days and pupal period of approximately nine and a half days at 25° C, the temperature at which the stock was kept. The changes in protein and its degradation products, total carbohydrate, fatty acids and unsaponifiable matter are studied at frequent intervals during the metamorphosis from larva to adult.

Effects of actinomycin D on nucleic acid metabolism and protein biosynthesis during metamorphosis of Tenebrio molitor L.
1. Injection of 0.16mug. of actinomycin D into pupae of the beetle Tenebrio molitor L. results in the development of modified adults in which the head and thorax are essentially adult while the abdomen and wings remain pupal-like. It is suggested that the messenger RNA for the development of head and thorax is present in the animal from the first day of pupation. 2. Injection of 0.16mug. of act...
متن کاملA novel putative insect chitinase with multiple catalytic domains: hormonal regulation during metamorphosis.
We have used differential display to identify genes that are regulated by juvenile hormone in the epidermis of the beetle Tenebrio molitor. One of the genes encodes T. molitor chitinase 5 (TmChit5), a chitinase possessing an unusual structure. Sequence analysis of TmChit5 identified five 'chitinase units' of approx. 480 amino acids with similarity to chitinase family 18. These units are separat...
متن کاملQualitative and quantitative changes observed in the free alpha-amino nitrogen fraction of Tenebrio molitor pupal tissues during metamorphosis.
An outstanding feature of the biochemistry of insects is the fact that a very high concentration of free amino acids has been found in the haemolymph of every insect so far investigated. (See Florkin, 1949; Buck, 1953.) This represents about twothirds of the total free amino acids in the insect, and concentrations of from 20 to 100 times that of the total free a-amino nitrogen content of mammal...
متن کاملEffect of biogenic amines on the contractile activity of visceral muscles in the beetle Tenebrio molitor
Biogenic amines are biological active compounds that play a significant role in regulation of animal physiology. In insects, the main amines are trace amines like octopamine and tyramine. Those two amines seem to be a partial counterparts of epinephrine and norepinephrine present in vertebrates. Little is known about activity of those compounds in beetles, hence we examined effects of 4 amines ...
متن کاملThe Humidity Behaviour of the Mealworm Beetle, Tenebrio Molitor L. I. the Reaction to Differences of Humidity
HUMIDITY is well known to be a factor of great importance in the lives of many insects and other terrestrial arthropods. Apart, however, from the pioneer work of Shelford (1913) and his school on the rather complex stimulus of "evaporating power of the air", there has been, until recently, little detailed and exact study of the behaviour of animals towards humidity as a stimulus. The recently d...
