Fourier Series Analysis of Epicyclic Gearbox Vibration
نویسنده
چکیده
Epicyclic gears are used in many applications because they can achieve a large torque/speed ratio in a compact package. In most gearboxes, the estimated spectrum of the vibration signal is symmetric and centered at the meshing frequency. For epicyclic gears, the estimated spectrum is typically asymmetric and the dominant frequency component does not occur at the meshing frequency. This is an important observation because some of the popular methods of fault detection use the meshing frequency and sideband signal power as an indication of the gearbox health @1,2#. McFadden and Smith @3# were the first to recognize that this effect was due to the varying phase angles of the vibration produced by each of the planet gears. They used phasor sums to identify the dominant spectral components, but were unable to predict the relative amplitudes of the dominant components. This study generalizes their work using continuous-time Fourier series ~CTFS! analysis. This provides a more thorough and intuitive explanation of the observed spectrum and leads to a number of insights that could not be gained with phasor sums alone.

Gearbox is a very complex mechanical system that can generate vibrations from its various elements such as gears, shafts, and bearings. Transmission path effect, signal coupling, and noise contamination can further induce difficulties to the development of diagnostic system for a gearbox. The gear faults are time-localized transient events so time-frequency analysis techniques (such as the Short-Time Fourier Transform, Wavelet Transform, motor current signature analysis) are widely used to deal with non-stationary and nonlinear signals. Newly developed signal processing techniques (such as empirical mode decomposition and Teager Kaiser Energy Operator) enabled the recognition of...
متن کاملThe Local Maxima Method for Enhancement of Time-Frequency Map
In this paper a new method of failure detection in rotating machinery is presented. It is based on a vibration time series analysis. A pure vibration signal is decomposed via the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and new time series for each frequency bin are processed using novel approach called local maxima method. We search for local maxima because they appear in the signal if local damage...

The diagnosis of gearbox faults based on the Fourier analysis of the vibration signal produced from a gear reductor system has proved its limitations in terms of spectral resolution. In this paper, we propose a method for the fault diagnosis of a gear reductor made of two toothed wheels operating at constant conditions. This technique is based on Prony method. The good performances of the propo...
