چکیده

As most local recurrence after breast-conserving treatment occurs within 2 cm around the lumpectomy cavity, wide-volume partial breast rather than whole breast irradiation has been actively investigated with a view to decreasing radiation toxicities. Replacing external beam radiotherapy by wide-volume interstitial brachytherapy offers the advantages of more accurate treatment volume coverage and a shorter duration of radiation treatment. Incorporating high-dose-rate treatment in brachytherapy has the additional advantage of allowing dosimetric optimisation. This article reports our technique and experience of high-dose-rate wide-volume partial breast brachytherapy, also known as accelerated partial breast irradiation, in breast-conserving

Brachytherapy in breast cancer: an effective alternative

Breast conserving surgery (BCS) with following external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) of the conserved breast has become widely accepted in the last decades for the treatment of early invasive breast cancer. The standard technique of EBRT after BCS is to treat the whole breast up to a total dose of 42.5 to 50 Gy. An additional dose is given to treated volume as a boost to a portion of the breas...

Accelerated partial breast irradiation: Past, present, and future

Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) focuses higher doses of radiation during a shorter interval to the lumpectomy cavity, in the setting of breast conserving therapy for early stage breast cancer. The utilization of APBI has increased in the past decade because of the shorter treatment schedule and a growing body of outcome data showing positive cosmetic outcomes and high local contro...

Brachytherapy in breast cancer

Breast conserving surgery (BCS) with postoperative radiotherapy has been a standard treatment of early stage breast cancer for the last 30 years. Interstitial brachytherapy has been used as a boost therapy after whole breast external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), and recently, it's been investigated in selected patients as a possible technique of a single radiotherapy modality (partial breast irrad...

Brachytherapy in accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) – review of treatment methods

Breast conserving surgery (BCS) with following radiotherapy (EBRT) of the conserved breast became widely accepted in the last decades as the treatment of early invasive breast cancer. In an early stage of breast cancer, research has shown that the area requiring radiation treatment to prevent cancer from local recurrence is the breast tissue that surrounds the area where the initial cancer was ...

Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI): A review of available techniques

Breast conservation therapy (BCT) is the procedure of choice for the management of the early stage breast cancer. However, its utilization has not been maximized because of logistics issues associated with the protracted treatment involved with the radiation treatment. Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) is an approach that treats only the lumpectomy bed plus a 1-2 cm margin, rather t...
