Turbulent momentum transport due to neoclassical flows

چکیده
Intrinsic toroidal rotation in a tokamak can be driven by turbulent momentum transport due to neoclassical flow effects breaking a symmetry of turbulence. In this paper we categorize the contributions due to neoclassical effects to the turbulent momentum transport, and evaluate each contribution using gyrokinetic simulations. We find that the relative importance of each contribution changes with collisionality. For low collisionality, the dominant contributions come from neoclassical particle and parallel flows. For moderate collisionality, there are nonnegligible contributions due to neoclassical poloidal electric field and poloidal gradients of density and temperature, which are not important for low collisionality. Turbulent momentum pinch of diamagnetic flows in a tokamak
The diamagnetic flow due to the radial pressure and temperature gradients and the E × B flow due to the radial electric field induce different turbulent momentum fluxes in a tokamak. As a result, when the diamagnetic and E × B flows cancel giving zero net toroidal rotation, there will still be finite momentum transport. This may be particularly important near the plasma–wall boundary where a st...
متن کاملTH-C/P8-44 Interaction between Turbulence and Neoclassical Dynamics and Its Effect on Tokamak Transport: Gyrokinetic Simulations and Theory
Abstract. The relationship between momentum and energy transport is investigated with focus on understanding recent experimental observations, using global gyrokinetic simulations with proper coupling between turbulence and neoclassical dynamics. First, a large inward flux of toroidal momentum is found robustly in the post saturation phase of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence. As a cons...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model
Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...
متن کاملNeutral Diffusion and Anomalous Effects on Ion Flow Shear
Bulk ion flow can be modified by ion-ncutral interactions in the edge region of tokamaks where neutral atoms are abundant. In this region, the standard neoclassical expression for the ion flow is not consistent with the experimental observations. Previous work in the plateau regime [Valanju, et al., Phys Fluids B 4, 2675 (1992)] suggests that the discrepancy is caused mainly by momentum loss du...
متن کاملTurbulent Transport of Toroidal Angular Momentum in Low Flow Gyrokinetics
We derive a self-consistent equation for the turbulent transport of toroidal angular momentum in tokamaks in the low flow ordering that only requires solving gyrokinetic Fokker-Planck and quasineutrality equations correct to second order in an expansion on the gyroradius over scale length. We also show that according to our orderings the long wavelength toroidal rotation and the long wavelength...
