چکیده

The cross-polar potential drop 8pc and the lowlatitude asymmetric geomagnetic disturbance field, as indicated by the mid-latitude ASY-H magnetic index, are used to study the average magnetospheric response to the solar wind forcing for southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. The state of the solar wind is monitored by the ACE spacecraft and the ionospheric convection is measured by the double probe electric field instrument on the Astrid-2 satellite. The solar wind-magnetosphere coupling is examined for 77 cases in February and from mid-May to mid-June 1999 by using the interplanetary magnetic fieldBz component and the reconnection electric field. Our results show that the maximum correlation between 8pc and the reconnection electric field is obtained approximately 25 min after the solar wind has reached a distance of 11 RE from the Earth, which is the assumed average position of the magnetopause. The corresponding correlation for ASY-H shows two separate responses to the reconnection electric field, delayed by about 35 and 65 min, respectively. We suggest that the combination of the occurrence of a large magnetic storm on 18 February 1999 and the enhanced level of geomagnetic activity which peaks at Kp = 7 may explain the fast direct response of ASY-H to the solar wind at 35 min, as well as the lack of any clear secondary responses of 8pc to the driving solar wind at time delays longer than 25 min.

A COMPARISON OF WIND OBSERVATIONS OF THE UPPER THERMOSPHERE FROM THE DYNAMIClS EXPLORER SATELLITE WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF A GLOBAL TIME-DEPENDENT MODEL

Seven polar passes of the NASA ~y~arnics Enpiorer 2 (DE-2) satellite during October and early December 1981 have been used to examine the high-latitude circulation in the upper thermosphere. Vector winds along the satellite track are derived by appropriate merging of thedata from the remote-sensing FabryPerotinterferometer(meridiona1 wind)and the insitu wind andtemperaturespectrometer(zona1 win...

Statistical study of the effect of ULF fluctuations in the IMF on the cross polar cap potential drop for northward IMF

[1] Recent studies showed that, regardless of the orientation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), ULF wave activity in the solar wind can substantially enhance the convection in the high latitude ionosphere, suggesting that ULF fluctuations may also be an important contributor to the coupling of the solar wind to the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system. We conduct a statistical study to und...

Magnetospheric responses to sudden and quasiperiodic solar wind variations

[1] On April 13 (day 103), 2001, 0700–1400 UT, the Polar satellite experienced different plasma regimes (i.e., magnetosphere, magnetosheath, and solar wind) because of the solar wind dynamic pressure variations and its high orbital inclination near the subsolar magnetopause meridian. When Polar was in the magnetosheath, quasiperiodic spacecraft potential (SP) variations, corresponding to densit...

Solar wind density controlling penetration electric field at the equatorial ionosphere during a saturation of cross polar cap potential

[1] The most important source of electrodynamic disturbances in the equatorial ionosphere during the main phase of a storm is the prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) originating from the high-latitude region. It has been known that such an electric field is correlated with the magnetospheric convection or interplanetary electric field. Here we show a unique case, in which the electric fiel...

Solar cycle variations in polar cap area measured by the superDARN radars

[1] We present a long-term study, from January 1996 to August 2012, of the latitude of the Heppner-Maynard Boundary (HMB) measured at midnight using the northern hemisphere Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). The HMB represents the equatorward extent of ionospheric convection and is used in this study as a measure of the global magnetospheric dynamics. We find that the yearly distribu...
