Comparing Imperfection Ratio and Imperfection Index for Graph Classes

چکیده
Perfect graphs constitute a well-studied graph class with a rich structure, reflected by many characterizations with respect to different concepts. Perfect graphs are, for instance, precisely those graphs G where the stable set polytope STAB(G) coincides with the fractional stable set polytope QSTAB(G). For all imperfect graphs G it holds that STAB(G) ⊂ QSTAB(G). It is, therefore, natural to use the difference between the two polytopes in order to decide how far an imperfect graph is away from being perfect; we discuss three different concepts, involving the facet set of STAB(G), the disjunctive index of QSTAB(G), and the dilation ratio of the two polytopes. Including only certain types of facets for STAB(G), we obtain graphs that are in some sense close to perfect graphs, for example minimally imperfect graphs, and certain other classes of so-called rank-perfect graphs. The imperfection ratio has been introduced by Gerke and McDiarmid [12] as the dilation ratio of STAB(G) and QSTAB(G), whereas Aguilera et al. [1] suggest to take the disjunctive index of QSTAB(G) as the imperfection index of G. For both invariants there exist no general upper bounds, but there are bounds known for the imperfection ratio of several graph classes [7, 12]. Outgoing from a graph-theoretical interpretation of the imperfection index, we conclude that the imperfection index is NP-hard to compute and we prove that there exists no upper bound on the imperfection index for those graph classes with a known bounded imperfection ratio. Comparing the two invariants on those classes, it seems that the imperfection index measures imperfection much more roughly than the imperfection ratio; we, therefore, discuss possible directions for refinements.

Characterizing and bounding the imperfection ratio for some classes of graphs
Perfect graphs constitute a well-studied graph class with a rich structure, reflected by many characterizations with respect to different concepts. Perfect graphs are, for instance, precisely those graphs G where the stable set polytope STAB(G) equals the fractional stable set polytope QSTAB(G). The dilation ratio min{t : QSTAB(G) ⊆ t STAB(G)} of the two polytopes yields the imperfection ratio ...
متن کاملGraph Imperfection with a Co-Site Constraint
We are interested in a version of graph colouring where there is a ‘co-site’ constraint value k. Given a graph G with a non-negative integral demand xv at each node v, we must assign xv positive integers (colours) to each node v such that the same integer is never assigned to adjacent nodes, and two distinct integers assigned to a single node differ by at least k. The aim is to minimise the spa...
متن کاملGraph Imperfection II
The imperfection ratio is a graph invariant which indicates how good a lower bound the weighted clique number gives on the weighted chromatic number, in the limit as weights get large. Its introduction was motivated by investigations of the radio channel assignment problem, where one has to assign channels to transmitters and the demands for channels at some transmitters are large. In this pape...
متن کاملEffects of Radial Imperfection on the Load Capacity of Round HSS Columns
Geometric imperfections such as radial imperfection, diamond shape, and local dimples could affect the buckling mode and load carrying capacity of axially compressed steel tubular columns. This paper experimentally investigates the effect of radial imperfection on the load carrying capacity of tubular columns. Test samples include 100 specimens with different values for diameter, length, thickn...
متن کاملClutter nonidealness
Several key results for set packing problems do not seem to be easily or even possibly transferable to set covering problems, although the symmetry between them. The goal of this paper is to introduce a nonidealness index by transferring the ideas used for the imperfection index defined by Gerke and McDiarmid [Graph imperfection, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 83 (2001) 58–78]. We found a relationshi...
