چکیده

Fertilizer application in crop production agriculture has been identified as a major source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. Thus, management strategies that increase fertilizer N use efficiency will reduce N2O emission. Anhydrous ammonia applied to cropland in the fall is recognized as amanagement practice that increases the risk of N loss from the rooting zone, however, this practice is still common in the U.S. Midwest Corn Belt. The nitrification inhibitor, nitrapyrin has been shown to decrease soil N losses during the fall and spring, and maintain fertilizer N availability to the crop. Additionally, nitrification inhibitors have shown promise in reducing soil N2O emissions. However, there have been no studies evaluating the effectiveness of nitrapyrin to reduce annual N2O emissions from land receiving fall-applied anhydrous ammonia. This studywas conducted over 2 years tomeasure N2O emissions from corn plots with fall-applied anhydrous ammoniawith andwithout nitrapyrin. Based on soil NO3 and NH4 analyses, we observed that nitrapyrin delayed nitrification, and in 1 year, reduced late fall/early spring N2O emission. However, annual N2O emissions were not significantly reduced. Significantly higher corn grain yields were observed in the nitrapyrin treatment in both years. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Impacts of Enhanced Efficiency Nitrogen Fertilizers on Yield-scaled N2o Emissions in Illinois Maize by Rebecca Graham Thesis

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with about 300 times the global warming potential of CO2 and significant levels of this GHG come from agriculture. A two-year field experiment was conducted to assess the ability of enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers (EENFs) to minimize yield-scaled N2O emissions while maintaining nutrient utilization and crop productivity of maize. In ...

Tile Drainage Nitrate Losses and Corn Yield Response to Fall and Spring Nitrogen Management.

Nitrogen (N) management strategies that maintain high crop productivity with reduced water quality impacts are needed for tile-drained landscapes of the US Midwest. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of N application rate, timing, and fall nitrapyrin addition on tile drainage nitrate losses, corn ( L.) yield, N recovery efficiency, and postharvest soil nitrate content ove...

Nitrapyrin addition mitigates nitrous oxide emissions and raises nitrogen use efficiency in plastic-film-mulched drip-fertigated cotton field

Nitrification inhibitors (NIs) have been used extensively to reduce nitrogen losses and increase crop nitrogen nutrition. However, information is still scant regarding the influence of NIs on nitrogen transformation, nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and nitrogen utilization in plastic-film-mulched calcareous soil under high frequency drip-fertigated condition. Therefore, a field trial was conducted...

The combined effects of nitrification inhibitor and biochar incorporation on yield-scaled N2O emissions from an intensively managed vegetable field in southeastern China

An experiment was conducted to study the influences of nitrification inhibitor (NI) and biochar incorporation on yield-scaled N2O using the static chamber method and gas chromatography in an intensively managed vegetable field with seven consecutive vegetable crops from 2012 to 2014 in southeastern China. With an equal annual nitrogen (N) application rate (1217 kgNha yr), six treatments under t...

Corn yield response to polymer and non-coated urea placement and timings

Poorly drained claypan soils can increase the importance of tillage and N management for corn (Zea mays L.) production. Field research in 2008, 2009 and 2010 (high rainfall years) near Novelty, MO (40° 1' N, 92° 11' W) sought to determine the effect of polymer-coated urea (PCU) placement [strip-tillage (ST) deep banded and no-till (NT) broadcast] and application timing (fall, early preplant...
