Acoustic fluidization for earthquakes?

چکیده

Melosh [1996] has suggested that acoustic fluidization could provide an alternative to theories that are invoked as explanations for why some faults appear to be weak. We show that there is a subtle but profound inconsistency in the theory that unfortunately invalidates the results. We propose possible remedies but must acknowledge that the relevance of acoustic fluidization remains an open question.

Laboratory observation of acoustic fluidization in granular fault gouge and implications for dynamic weakening of earthquake faults

[1] Several lines of evidence, including remote triggering of earthquakes and modulation of seismic tremor by Earth tides, suggest that faults weakenwhen subject to shaking and dynamic stresses associatedwith the passage of seismic waves. However, the origin of such dynamic weakening is poorly understood. Here we explore the role of acoustic resonance for dynamic fault weakening using laborator...

Convection and fluidization in oscillatory granular flows: The role of acoustic streaming.

Convection and fluidization phenomena in vibrated granular beds have attracted a strong interest from the physics community since the last decade of the past century. As early reported by Faraday, the convective flow of large inertia particles in vibrated beds exhibits enigmatic features such as frictional weakening and the unexpected influence of the interstitial gas. At sufficiently intense v...

0 Ju l 1 99 8 Mechanochemistry : an hypothesis for shallow earthquakes

We advance the novel hypothesis that water in the presence of finite localized strain within fault gouges may lead to the phase transformation of stable minerals into metastable polymorphs of higher free energy density. Under increasing strain, the transformed minerals eventually become unstable, as shown from an application of Landau theory of structural phase transitions. We propose that this...

Acoustic Field Effects on Minimum Fluidization Velocity in a 3d Fluidized Bed

Fluidized beds are used in a variety of process industries because they provide uniform temperature distributions, low pressure drops, and high heat/mass rates. Minimum fluidization velocity is an important factor in understanding the hydrodynamic behavior of fluidized beds, and this characteristic may be modified through high frequency (sound) vibrations. The effects caused by sound wave frequ...

Dynamic Weakening by Acoustic Fluidization during Stick-Slip Motion.

The unexpected weakness of some faults has been attributed to the emergence of acoustic waves that promote failure by reducing the confining pressure through a mechanism known as acoustic fluidization, also proposed to explain earthquake remote triggering. Here we validate this mechanism via the numerical investigation of a granular fault model system. We find that the stick-slip dynamics is af...
