Study suggests that non-linear frequency compression helps children with moderate loss

چکیده

Contemporary digital hearing aids typically provide substantial benefit to children with mild to moderately severe hearing loss. However, for many hearing-impaired children, difficulty remains with certain aspects of speech recognition and production, such as the phonemes /s/ and /z/. The Phonak Nios micro-hearing aid utilises non-linear frequency compression (NLFC) technology, designed to lower frequencies within the designated range, with clinician-programmable cut-off frequency and compression ratio. The primary objective of NLFC is to restore audibility of highfrequency inputs up to approximately 8000 Hz utilizing an algorithm that implements compression of acoustic input exceeding the programmed cut-off frequency, shifting high frequencies to a lower more audible range without interfering with frequencies below the cut-off.

Evaluation of wideband frequency responses and non-linear frequency compression for children with mild to moderate high-frequency hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate wideband amplification and non-linear frequency compression (NLFC) as a means to improve speech recognition for children with mild/moderate hearing loss. DESIGN Randomized within-subject design with repeated measures across test conditions. STUDY SAMPLE Eleven children with mild to moderate hearing loss were evaluated with: (1) Phonak BTE without NLFC, (2) Phonak BTE w...

Performance of children fitted with multi-channel, non-linear hearing aids

The basic goal of amplification is to provide audibility for speech without making sounds uncomfortably loud. These requirements must be followed with special care with pediatric patients to ensure they have the opportunity to develop their speech, language, and auditory skills to their full potential. This is because young children have more difficulty filling in missing information than do ol...

Preferred low- and high-frequency compression ratios among hearing aid users with moderately severe to profound hearing loss.

This study aimed to determine the low- and high-frequency compression ratios of a fast-acting device that were preferred by people with moderately severe to profound hearing loss. Three compression ratios (1:1, 1.8:1, and 3:1) were combined in the low and high frequencies to produce nine schemes that were evaluated pair-wise for three weeks in the field using an adaptive procedure. The evaluati...

Acoustic analysis of speech through a hearing aid: perceptual effects of changes with two-channel compression.

Compression amplification significantly alters the acoustic speech signal in comparison to linear amplification. The central hypothesis of the present study was that the compression settings of a two-channel aid that best preserved the acoustic properties of speech compared to linear amplification would yield the best perceptual results, and that the compression settings that most altered the a...

The Study of Perception and Expression of Nouns and Reliability of Two Visual Comprehension and Expression of Nouns Tests in Mild-Moderate Hearing Loss Children

Background and Objective: Children with hearing loss demonstrate cognitive, communication, speech and language deficits. Poor organization in mental lexicon and reduction in vocabulary are the obvious consequences of hearing loss. The main objective of this study was to evaluate perception and expression of nouns, and test-retest reliability of two picture-pointing and picture-naming tests,...
