چکیده

Tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV) is a major economic threat to tobacco production in Georgia. Several thrips species are reported as vectors of TSWV, and three of these species are observed on Georgia tobacco, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds), F. occidentalis (Pergande), and F. bispinosa (Morgan). This study evaluated several thrips control practices for efficacy and suppressing the incidence of TSWV. Five replicated field trials were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to examine acephate, imidacloprid, acibenzolar-S-methyl, spinosad, dichloropropene, chlorpyrifos, thiamethoxan, alone, and in various combinations, applied as preplant incorporated, tray drench, transplant water, or foliar treatments. The insecticides imidacloprid and thiamethoxan applied as a greenhouse tray drench or as a transplant water treatment, were effective in reducing the seasonal incidence of TSWV and imidacloprid was also effective in reducing thrips populations. The plant activator, acibenzolar-S-methyl, was effective in suppressing TSWV symptoms, but had little effect on thrips. The combination of acibenzolar-S-methyl with imidacloprid provided better suppression of TSWV than either product alone. Early-season foliar sprays of acephate also was effective in reducing thrips numbers and TSWV. Dichloropropene, chlorpyrifos and spinosad were not effective for thrips control or TSWV suppression. F. fusca was the predominate thrips species on tobacco foliage, ranging from 82.7–94.9% of the thrips complex. Only 4.6% and 1.2% of the thrips specimen were confirmed as vectors of TSWV in 1999 and 2000, respectively, based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test results. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxan, acibenzolar-S-methyl, and acephate do provide thrips control options that can reduce TSWV in tobacco, and these materials are labeled for tobacco.

Tactics for management of thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and tomato spotted wilt virus in tomato.

Four studies were conducted in Georgia during spring 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 to evaluate various management tactics for reducing thrips and thrips-vectored tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in tomato and their interactions relative to fruit yield. Populations of thrips vectors of TSWV, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Frankliniella fusca (Hinds), were determined using flower and stic...

Evaluation of Frankliniella Bispinosa (thysanoptera: Thripidae) as a Vector of the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus in Pepper

Frankliniella occidentalis is the key vector responsible for the emergence of Tomato spotted wilt virus as a global threat to agriculture. Frankliniella bispinosa is a common thrips in Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, but the role of F. bispinosa in the epidemiology of the virus is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of F. bispinosa to acquire and transmit Tomato...

Expression and characterization of a soluble form of tomato spotted wilt virus glycoprotein GN.

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), a member of the Tospovirus genus within the Bunyaviridae, is an economically important plant pathogen with a worldwide distribution. TSWV is transmitted to plants via thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), which transmit the virus in a persistent propagative manner. The envelope glycoproteins, G(N) and G(C), are critical for the infection of thrips, but they are not...

Seasonal dispersal patterns of Frankliniella fusca (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and tomato spotted wilt virus occurrence in central and eastern North Carolina.

The seasonal abundance and temporal pattern of Frankliniella fusca Hinds dispersal were monitored from 1996 to 2000 at 12 locations in central and eastern North Carolina. The predominant vector species of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) captured across all locations was F. fusca (98%). The temporal patterns of F. fusca dispersal observed during spring seasons varied among locations in all year...

In the past 30 years, western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), has become one of the most important agricultural pests worldwide. Certain biological attributes of this insect predispose it to be a direct pest across a wide range of crops. In addition to the direct damage it can cause, this species is an efficient vector of Tomato spotted wilt virus...
