An Introduction to the Theory of Obstructions: Notes from the Obstruction Theory Seminar at West Virginia University

چکیده
The generalization of everyday concepts, and applying rigor thereunto, has long intrigued the mathematician. The topic of an obstruction theory arises from the question of deforming continuous maps, and what, exactly, holes are. Intuitively, the fundamental difference between an orange and a doughnut is that a doughnut has a hole, and an orange does not. When shrinking a rubber band around an orange, the rubber band will vanish; whereas the rubber band that passes through the hole of the doughnut, or the one that encircles the doughnut at its widest point, cannot vanish without cutting the doughnut or snapping the rubber band. When we apply the mathematical rigor that transforms oranges, doughnuts, and rubber bands into spheres, tori, and copies of S, we raise the question of what the “empty space” in the torus actually represents. The shrinking of the rubber band represents continuous deformations of circles and spheres. What, then, will obstruct our continuous deformation? The answer to this question forms the foundation of an obstruction theory.

These notes are designed to accompany the lectures given by the author in the Geometric Langlands Seminar at the University of Chicago in the autumn quarter of 2007. The goal of the lectures was to give a brief introduction to J. Lurie’s work on ∞-categories. In the notes we provide some additional background from category theory and homotopy theory, as well as an extensive collection of exerci...
متن کاملIs Meconium Obstruction Distinguishable from Intestinal Obstruction through Ultrasound?
Background: Since the treatment of meconium ileus is very different from other types of intestinal obstruction, it is very important to distinguish these two entities. The aim of this study was to assess sonographic findings to differentiate meconium ileus from other types of obstruction. Methods: This study was performed in Dr. Sheikh and Akbar hospitals, Mashhad Medical University of Science...

Peritoneal adhesions are the leading cause of intestinal obstruction up to 74% of cases. In spite of increasing incidence worldwide, current management still presents some “blind corners”, whose aspects s...
